Update: 3/25/06 Bo is a great puppy. All he needs is love, attention, exercise, and training. Yes, like all typical youngsters, this Springer needs it all and is making good progress with his foster family. His little personality continues to unfold and reveal itself. He is a sweet, funny, little boy who is very, very, smart. He figured out how to use the doggie door more quickly than any other dog the family has fostered!
In his original home Bo was an only dog. Lacking other dogs to learn from, his “doggie savvy” left a little bit to be desired and he is just now learning important lessons that only dogs can teach each other. At first Bo could be downright rude to his foster brothers, sticking his nose in after repeated warnings to go away. After some serious “discussions” between him and the resident dogs, Bo is learning to respect their cues. Because he is being more polite, the residents boys are now willing to play with him.
There is a toddler in his foster home and Bo loves him. Of course, the little boy loves Bo too. However, Bo is still mouthy and very energetic. Play between the two is appropriate and very charming but is always directly overseen by the foster mom. Bo will not be placed in a home with toddlers unless the home is experienced with the combination of energetic dogs and very young children.
Good house manners need to develop at Bo’s age. He needs to learn that snacks from the trash can and first dibs on food from the counter are no-nos. He is a big boy for a four-month-old puppy. He will likely be a large strapping fellow when he’s grown. Combine that with his smarts and energy level and it’s clear he needs a forever family who will be committed to obedience training. He can be a great adult, but the groundwork must be laid now.
A few final thoughts on Bo, he is not always quick to pick up on subtle social cues. There are no cats in his foster home, but his family can see that any cat he lived with would have to be very dog tolerant and more than willing to stand its ground if necessary. Also, many smart and energetic Springers are happiest if they have a “job.” Bo is both and could excel in various dog sports with the proper training. He is ready to love a family who will love the “hands on” chance to help him grow up, is that you?
Original Bo is a lovely boy who was surrendered because he was too much for his owners to handle. They loved him dearly, but it was the wrong match of family and energy level.
Bo has already started to make himself comfortable and is trying to carry off anything not nailed down. He is all Springer puppy!
He’s a good boy and we’ll have more soon.
