Update 08/21/2026: “Blue is a champ at taking his medicine with hot dogs. If there’s a monthly hot dog subscription service, his new family should probably sign up!”
If Blue had a wish list for his new foster home, it might include a dog sibling that liked to play. He could be very playful with a like-minded dog. His foster sibling tends to hoard toys so Blue gets excluded. There have been a few scuffles over toys and some resource guarding, but his foster parents found that if they just ignore what Blue has in his mouth (provided it isn’t dangerous) it’s not such a big deal. If they don’t act like they want it, Blue doesn’t want it so much, either. That said, he does like remote controls, so those should be guarded! When Blue is about to grab an object he shouldn’t have, he fixates on it for a few seconds, so a quick human can grab it first!
If his new home didn’t have a canine playmate, his foster mom suspects Blue would enjoy a good game of fetch with his people. He doesn’t wander far off when out in the yard. He sticks around and comes when he’s called. Blue likes to sniff and explore, and he will chase wildlife, like deer, out of the yard.
Blue is a champ at taking his medicine with hot dogs. If there’s a monthly hot dog subscription service, his new family should probably sign up! In his foster home, the dogs have “hot dog time,” and they are doled out to all three with Blue’s containing medicine; he doesn’t even know his is any different.
This boy likes to eat! At his previous home, Blue ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In his foster home, he has breakfast and dinner. Sometimes he seems hungrier, so his foster mom will give him an extra scoop. He’ll let his people know when it’s mealtime, and if he’s still hungry!
Blue’s medication shouldn’t be much of a burden to his new family. By using online pharmacies and possibly even human pharmacies, the cost can be reasonable.
Blue will have his bloodwork done soon to check his phenobarb levels. This will determine how often he should have it checked. If he continues to be seizure-free, the medicine is working and there shouldn’t be a need for frequent check-ups.
Looking for a new best friend? Blue could be just the one you’re looking for.
Original: “Blue can be relaxed and low-key, or he can play. He is very even tempered, and a great companion.”
Blue came to MAESSR when his Virginia owner sadly had to enter assisted living. It is obvious that he received great care and was well loved. This good boy is 100% housetrained, has never had an accident in foster care, and will bark when he wants to go outside. At his foster home, and at his previous home, he was trained on an invisible fence, which seems to work for him. A fenced yard would be great for Blue. While his recall is pretty good, he shouldn’t be trusted to “free range” outside alone. He likes to explore!
In his former home Blue was crate trained and went into his crate if he needed a time out. He has free reign with no issues in his foster home. When his foster family isn’t home, he plops down and sleeps. At night, he sleeps in bed with his foster mom, but sometimes he’ll get up and roam around and sleep wherever he lands. Occasionally he does require a potty break in the middle of the night.
Blue’s house manners are pretty good. He does counter-surf a bit and he’ll jump up when he’s excited, but for the most part he’s a very good houseguest. Blue does get on furniture, but that’s allowed in his foster home. He does not have the opportunity to get into the trash but might if he had the chance!
Blue does pull on a leash, and he’s strong. He doesn’t walk too often as most time outdoors is in the backyard. A harness or collar for dogs that pull could be useful for his adopting family. Blue is fine meeting other people and dogs; he’s a sniffer. Blue loves anything in the sky. When planes go by, he stops to watch. With birds, it’s the same thing – he’s mesmerized. And he also loves drinking out of puddles after it rains!
He does love car rides, and if he’s not restrained with a doggy seat belt in the back, Blue would likely become a front seat passenger! As for commands, he’s good with “sit” and “down,” sometimes he’ll do a “shake,” but he’s a little rusty on the training that he’s had.
With toys, Blue can exhibit a little resource guarding with one that he really likes. His foster family never really knows which toy becomes precious to him, but he can be distracted with a good trade. Blue loves balls, mostly to carry around in his mouth. He’ll chase one if it is thrown, but the resident dog is obsessed with balls, so she doesn’t often let him get it. Given the opportunity, he’d be a ball player. He’ll chew on a stuffy here and there.
At the vet, Blue was fantastic and everyone loved him. He can be touched all over. He has not been groomed in foster care, but he is reported to be good at the groomer…one can tell because he has a beautiful, well-trimmed coat.
Blue does have epilepsy, but it is controlled with medication. He’s had one seizure since he’s been at his foster home. His body got stiff, he lay down and his legs shook for about a minute. After that, he got some water and got back in bed with his foster mom. It took him about 20 minutes to settle and he fell back asleep. Blue takes two medications often prescribed for epilepsy in the morning and evening; sometimes it’s tricky to get him to take it. Hot dogs are the best way his foster parents have found. They are still working on getting his medicine adjusted, but it’s almost there.
His foster mom believes that Blue would do great in a home with a fenced yard, and he’d be okay with an older person, as he’s an older guy himself! Blue can be relaxed and low-key, or he can play. He is very even tempered, and a great companion. He’s not so Velcro that his person can’t move, but stays close enough that his presence is known. Blue loves to give kisses! Are you ready for some?
