Original:
When his Pennsylvania owner’s life became more complicated with longer work hours and a baby on the way, he realized that his Springer Blue deserved a better life than what he was able to give him. So, this handsome, calm boy came into MAESSR’s care.
Blue now resides with two resident MAESSR girls and he is great with them. If they don’t want to play, he doesn’t keep pestering them. When he meets new dogs on a walk, Blue sniffs and moves on. His previous home had two cats in it, and Blue would chase them if they would run. When cats were sleeping, he would go up to them inquisitively and try to sniff them but had never been aggressive with them. When the cats got tired of him sniffing, they would bat him and then he would leave them alone. His former owner stated Blue had been around a toddler and that he was very calm around the little one.
Completely housetrained, Blue signals by going to the door. He does not need his people to go out with him; he just goes out, inspects the back yard for any stray squirrel or bird that may have wandered onto his property, eliminates, and comes back to the door. Although he was crate-trained as a puppy, one is not needed now and he has free run of the house along with resident Springers. At night he lies on his dog bed in the master bedroom, sleeping quietly through the night.
In the house Blue will chew on a toy and basically just hang out with his foster parents. He loves to be invited up on the sofa for a little extra snuggling! Even though he does not counter-surf, Blue sometimes will walk around the kitchen on two hind feet to see what is on counters, but paws never touch the counter. Good boy, Blue! He is not interested in the trashcan and only chews on his toys. He will bark if doorbell rings or someone walks past, but is not excessive. If you call his name, the barking stops immediately.
Blue knows quite a few commands including “sit,” “stay,” “paw,” “down,” “come,” “up,” “stop,” and “leave it.” Sometimes you will have to repeat the command because he has selective hearing if something is more interesting. Blue loves his walks on a leash which may be a little new to him; so, the first block he pulls and then settles down. His previous owner mostly walked Blue off leash when he lived in the country. Then, a whistle and a “come” command would bring him back. Always up for a car ride, Blue stays in the back and is asleep within a couple of minutes. When awake in the car, he quietly looks out the window. He has been friendly with everyone he has met on his walks. If rabbit or squirrel happens to come across his path, hold on! But, saying “sit” and “leave it” will have him right by your feet.
Blue loves the outdoors! He is an avid swimmer, loves walking, and going to beach and dog park. He loves to run free and chase a ball, but just don’t expect it to be returned all the time! He needs practice retrieving. With his former owner, Blue spent a year living on a large sailboat, anchored to an island where he was free to roam with the birds and wild horses; then, he moved to an urban area and was not too happy. His foster home is by the bay and ocean and he is having the time of his life between the beach and swimming in the bay. He is quite active outside and loves being with people; inside he will play with his toys quietly and follow his people from room to room, quite the Velcro boy!
Blue’s forever family must be dedicated to walking him and exercising him multiple times a day. He loves people so if his family were home all day, Blue would be happiest; if they’re not home, he sleeps by the door waiting.
Blue will be at the Pasadena, Maryland MAESSR picnic on September 8th for anyone who wants to meet him! You’ll want to take him home!
