Update 09/27/10:
With each passing day, Miss Beryl is putting her recent health problems further and further behind her. She’s a happy girl and will bring much joy to one very lucky family.
Toward putting her very best paw forward, she’d like to share her latest progress!
Beryl has a slight limp for which she has seen the vet. Upon exam her vet could not pinpoint the source of this but thinks it may be from an old injury. The recommendation was that she be given an over-the-counter med daily for this and it seems to be working. She isn’t slowed down a bit in playing with other dogs!
Though not fully grown back, her coat is coming in nicely. Beryl is still a little patchy on her hindquarters but expects to have every hair in place to keep her cozy by the time winter sets in.
Along with feeling better has come a very healthy appetite for this girl. It’s helping her gain weight and to have more energy at playtime. This should quickly bring a nice tone to her muscles and maybe, just maybe, put her in the running for a center fold shot in her favorite doggie magazine!
Update 09/15/10:
Beryl has to be feeling so much better. She’s finished antibiotics for her yeast infection and has about a week to go on another med that has helped combat this problem. She is still pretty itchy and loves to roll and scratch her back on pavement, every chance she gets. Her fur is starting to come back on her back and rear and she has a funny tuft on her tail as new hair grows there too.
With this progress she is feeling frisky. She is starting to play with the other dogs and is socializing well with the resident 4 year old male Springer. She is putting on weight, though she still needs muscle tone. In a few days she’ll be starting longer walks with her foster family to move this along.
Beryl comes readily when called and is practicing “sit,” “stay,” “come,” “down,” and “heel.” She is pretty good with the first three commands and is getting better with her heeling and ability to “down” on request. When Beryl is looking quizzical, (as she does sometimes when her family is working with her), her ears stick out, giving her a distinct Yoda look that is pretty charming!
Her family has informally renamed this gal, Holly. Their resident Springer is named Buddy. With “Beryl” being so similar sounding, this has helped both dogs and people in their home. Consequently they have Buddy Holly!
With timely vetting and lots of TLC, Beryl has put a terribly miserable condition to rest. She’s ready to get on with life as it should be for a healthy, active lovebug. She brings smiles to all around her. Ask about meeting her! She’ll easily take you in too!!
Original:
When poor Beryl was found in a shelter in New Jersey, her skin was in bad condition due to a massive flea infestation which then caused a yeast infection over her entire body. As a result, she had lost most of her coat. MAESSR’s team of volunteers swooped in and got Beryl into a foster home quickly. She went to the vet and was started on several medications to get the infection and itchiness under control.
Beryl has now been in foster care for a week and she already looks so much better! It will be several weeks until she is healthy enough to be spayed. When she went for her vet appointment, Beryl tested positive for Lyme disease and Erlichea. Although she is not symptomatic, she is receiving an antibiotic to help ensure she does not become symptomatic for these tick-born diseases.
One area that does not need any work is Beryl’s fantastically sweet, loving personality! She wants to cuddle and love everyone.
Please keep an eye out for more updates on Beryl as she recuperates.
