Bernie was a stray when brought into an eastern Pennsylvania shelter. In addition to that adorable face, Bernie has a gorgeous dark and shiny coat. He was quickly adopted from the shelter by a family with dogs. However, he was returned because he didn’t get along with the older resident dog. It seems the other dog did not appreciate Bernie’s advances to play and so the family felt it best that Bernie be placed in another home. Then MAESSR stepped in with a foster home and that was Bernie’s lucky day.
At 28 pounds, he is very thin and needing to put on some weight, but don’t let this little boy fool you. He’s got energy to burn and loves running around in the fenced backyard of his foster home. Even the kennel cough he’s recuperating from doesn’t seem to slow him down.
Bernie has had a brief refresher course in Housetraining 101 and has done beautifully in that area, not having any accidents at all since joining his foster home. He sleeps in his crate at night, again with no potty problems, and when his foster mom is at work. He does fine in his crate ’til she gets home in 6-7 hours. All this in less than one week after coming from the shelter. He is doing quite well, and everyone is very pleased, including Bernie!
Bernie lives with a 2-year-old resident, female Springer and is a bit energetic for her right now. He likes to jump and tumble, and she prefers a more modest stroll around the yard. They are still in the process of getting to know each other. Sometimes his foster sister is up for a bit of play, but when things get a little rough, she runs for the protection of her mom or dad. There is nothing mean-spirited about Bernie he just still has a lot of puppy in him and lots of playtime to catch up on.
A firm and consistent hand with obedience training and basic manners will be important for Bernie. He has learned “come”, “sit” and “out.” He’s not too accomplished on a leash just yet and pulls considerably, even for his light weight. What he lacks in size, he more than makes up for in spirit and energy.
When Bernie settles down at night to watch a bit of TV with the family, he is very sweet. He loves to be petted and enjoys an occasional belly rub. Are you ready to make a difference in this little boy’s future? He hasn’t had much of the good life so far, but there’s plenty of time to teach him how to be part of a loving family. All he needs is a family to call his own. Can you help him out?!?!?
