This high energy, one year old Springer came into MAESSR’s care when his Delaware family did not have the time to devote to him due to their busy work schedules. Bennie has quickly adapted to life in his foster home which he shares with the resident, 11 year old female Springer. He had dog brothers in his original home and is getting used to being around his foster sister. Although he is very curious about her, she would prefer that he just leave her alone! Bennie is completely housetrained and can be trusted when left alone. Although he will go into his crate, he prefers not to do so. It was reported by the neighbors that he barked when left in the crate during the day; so, Bennie is given free run of the house now and his barking has ceased. With excellent house manners, he doesn’t trash dive or counter-surf. At first Bennie was reluctant to go in the car, but now he knows that the car takes him to great places like the park so he is happy to hop in and go!
With no formal training, Bennie knows “sit” and that’s about it. He also pulls on the leash and needs obedience training– something MAESSR requires for adopted Springers that are a year and younger. At his old house, he had the run of the backyard; however, at his foster home, he must be walked on the leash. He is adjusting, but he’d love to run after all the squirrels, cats, and neighborhood residents! He also needs additional socialization since he is hesitant when meeting new people. He has been around children as young as 4 with no problem. Bennie likes to chase tennis balls and pull toys and he loves chewing rawhide treats!
His ideal family will need to invest time and energy into training and socializing Bennie, but every effort towards this end will be well worth it. He is a great boy with lots of potential.
