Benji came to MAESSR because he was just too much for his New Jersey owner to handle. Still very much a puppy, he is an energetic Springer who needs lots of exercise and stimulation.
Benji’s foster parents are working with him on basic commands and house manners. He knows “sit” and “down” but these commands need reinforcement. He is still learning not to pull on a leash or jump on his foster parents for attention. If given the opportunity, Benji will counter-surf for goodies and, when he finds something he likes, he will take off running, playing “catch me if you can.” He does not get into the trash, chew inappropriately or dig in the yard. Good boy, Benji!
This young sweetie loves everyone he meets. He has been around children as young as five years old. He gets along well with other dogs, but as a young pup, he is still learning to respect boundaries and play nicely. His reaction to cats is unknown; however, Benji has a high prey drive so there is a good chance that he would chase the kitties.
Potential adopters should note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and under to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. Since Benji is such a smart boy, he should excel in his puppy classes!
At night Benji sleeps nicely in his crate. He is crate trained but is not yet housetrained. When his fosters parents are not home, Benji stays in the play pen.
Getting into the car is not something Benji likes to do; his foster mom has to pick him up to get him in. However, once in the car, Benji sits and rides very nicely.
This energizer bunny enjoys squeaky toys, fresh marrow bones, and playing Frisbee in the yard. His foster mom hasn’t been able to wear him out yet, but she’s still trying!
Benji eats in the kitchen, separate from the other dogs. There is no sign of food aggression or resource guarding, but Benji is very distracted when other dogs are around. He’s a hungry guy who wants to check out everyone else’s dinner before eating his own. He loves treats and is highly food motivated. This should help with his ongoing training.
At the vet Benji was super excited and had a hard time sitting still. Although he was a moving target, he did well overall. He also does well with nail trimming and ear cleaning, just be prepared to move fast! Benji has not been heartworm tested yet, but he has been on continuous preventative since 12 weeks old. He is scheduled to be neutered in the near future.
Benji is super high energy and will require a forever home who can keep up with him. He also needs someone who will help teach/reinforce basic training and manners. He would do well with kids and other dogs. There’s so much to love about the bundle of energy named Benji!
