Updated 3/7/07: Belle continues to improve with guidance in her foster home. She has reduced her “happy pee” by 75%. Her foster family is happy to report that she has also started to leave sneakers alone after two weeks of correction. She does play with other toys, but prefers tennis balls, which her foster parents retire when they get worn out. Belle is a high energy springer but she is not out of control. Overall, she is starting to calm down, but Belle loves to play whenever invited and will share her ball with you so that you can play, too. What a fun gal this one is!!
Original: Belle came to MAESSR when her former owners realized that having three children under the age of six would not give them enough time to spend on a springer puppy. She has adapted to her foster home very well. She loves playing with the young resident springer and she respects the space of the older resident springer. She has lots of energy and loves to play ball. Belle greets everybody who comes to the house with a ball and she has even fallen asleep with a ball in her mouth! When she isn’t playing catch with a tennis ball, she is trying to de-fuzz it!
Totally housebroken, Belle has fairly good house manners. She stays off the furniture but would love to join her foster family on the couch. When her foster family is away at work, Belle has the run of the house with her foster siblings. She had received puppy and intermediate level obedience training in her former home. Her command repertoire includes “sit,” “lie down,” “off” to get her off a person or the couch, and “in the box” as her command to go to her crate. She still pulls on the leash when she goes outside for a walk, but that will improve with a bit more training. Right now, Belle seems to think that merely walking is too slow a speed for a springer pup; running would be far more fun. Riding in the car is another fun activity for Belle. She’s all set for adventure.
When introduced to a new person, Belle will urinate a little. With a bit more time to settle from her move and increasing maturity, this behavior will hopefully disappear. Her foster family is working with Belle on an emerging mischief at this time. Most often she chews on appropriate objects like dog toys and balls. However, Belle has recently targeted some sneakers when her foster family was not at home. The family is beginning to address this inappropriate behavior.
Is there room in your active family for a springer like Belle? She’s waiting for you with tennis ball in mouth and long tail wagging!
