Original: Beau is a very handsome field bred springer. He came to MAESSR because a breeder had failed to sell Beau and his two brothers. The breeder was expecting another litter and needed to move these youngsters along. The breeder advertised them locally and a rescue group in western Maryland responded. That group cared for the three boys for several days until MAESSR fostering could be arranged.
Beau looks to be in good health, but he is painfully thin. Part of his lankiness may be his age, but at 38 pounds, he is also underweight. He has been wormed and with regular meals, he will put on weight and have much more energy! He has modest feathering on his legs and almost the most fully feathered tail his foster mom has ever seen on a springer! It’s really striking when he carries it out behind or sits with it curled around him.
This is really a sweetie dog. He attaches quickly to people and is very attentive to those who are with him daily. He meets strangers, both canine and human, in a relaxed, polite, and confident manner when out in public. He doesn’t demand that they notice him, but he is ever alert to everything around him and takes new sounds, smells, and scenes in stride.
In his foster home, Beau lives with an elderly beagle. Beau is gentle around him and doesn’t press for play. He gets play time with his foster family. Beau passes up toys, opting instead for wrestling around on the floor, followed with belly rubs and falling asleep in arms afterwards. Beau has met cats at the local shelter, both ones in large cages and the resident cat who has run of the facility. He either gently sniffed them or ignored them entirely, and they were pretty unthreatened by him, too.
Obedience lessons are starting for Beau. He is very bright and easy to train. He will work for praise and petting as well as liver treats. He loves being out in the woods on his 25′ flexi-leash and rarely uses all of its length. He often settles in beside his foster mom and “heel” may be the next command he learns. His house manners are very good for his age. Though still under close supervision, he is largely housetrained. He does well in a crate when traveling and at nights in the bedroom with the rest of his family. He is also crated while his family works for up to five hours at a time.
Beau seems to be at the end of his puppy stage but still tries new things until a limit is met. He has been caught counter-surfing. He will mouth his foster mom’s hand for attention. He will occasionally nibble at a piece of furniture. In a moment of excitement, he will put his paws up on a person, but responds quickly to “off.” He can be redirected so easily and is very easy to live with.
Beau would be one easy dog to train, to spoil, to live with, to love. He could easily move right into many homes. Though he has not met children while in his foster home, his foster mom feels that his steady, even temperament would make him a success with school age children. His first birthday is coming up soon. What Beau would really like, besides a bag of liver treats, would be a forever home and a family who will help him finish his growing up. Can you help out?
