Bear was pulled from a shelter in Philadelphia. He was neutered while he was there and is having some problems with his incision. He will be going to the vet’s tomorrow to get his vaccinations and to help with the healing of the neuter incision. He is growling at the other dogs in his foster home and sometimes people that are around him, excluding his foster mom. We feel this may be due to the discomfort from his incision. On the other hand, Bear did a little counter surfing and stole some butter from the counter. His foster mom was able to remove it from his mouth without any kind of incident.
Bear is completely house-trained, does not pull on a leash and does well in the yard without the leash. He does not leave the yard. He will play with the other dogs in the foster home for short periods of time. Again, we feel this is due to his incision hurting him. Bear is very attached to his foster mom and does not leave her side. He will follow her everywhere. She takes him to her office, everyday, in an effort to help socialize him.
We are putting Bear on hold until we can further evaluate him.
Update: 12/09/02
Bear has really improved and can be quite the little sweetheart. He is doing well with his foster mom’s female dog and is playing with her more. He loves to run and likes a ball in his mouth when they walk. He loves to be in the water and will fetch anything thrown in the water. He runs off leash but checks back to make sure you are close and comes when called. He does at times play or tolerate young male dogs unless he is with them inside. A male lab is with him in the office where his foster mom works. Bear growls and is aggressive to him. Bear should not be adopted by a home with another male dog.
Bear will growl at people he doesn’t know. If they let him come to them, he is usually fine. Sometimes he growls while his tail is wagging and walks over to let them pet him then runs over to me and leans against my leg. He has been going to the office with his foster mom everyday to get more socialized and mainly stays with her but does ok with the other staff.
Bear has been great with his foster mom, he loves attention and follows her everywhere. Anytime she sits down he is right against her on her lap. He listens well and has never had an accident in the house. Bear has not been exposed to children. He has encountered them on walks and hasn’t growled at them, but his foster mother is not sure how he would react and keeps him close to her in these circumstances.
Bear can be “growly” at times when he doesn’t like something but usually reprimanding him will make him stop. He does not like when you are upset with him, and this usually corrects the behavior. Bear is a wonderful boy and with no male dogs or kids, he will be a real joy for someone.
Is Bear the one for you?
Update:
Bear’s foster family adopted him.
