Update 03/31/09: Though promising in the beginning, as Barney’s personality emerged with increased time in foster care, it became apparent that he would not be suitable for adoption.
Original: When Barney’s owners could not afford to keep him, they relinquished him to a Virginia shelter. Then, MAESSR was contacted to help in his health care and to find him a new loving home.
Since he has been in his foster home, Barney has calmed down considerably and has integrated with the family dogs very well. He apparently had had some training prior to being relinquished to the animal shelter as he knows down and sit. He is good on a leash. His foster parents have started crate training Barney and he is doing well. He is fairly well housebroken at this point too. Although his house manners needed a refresher course, Barney has made great strides about being well-behaved in the house. He now knows that counter surfing is not acceptable behavior, but he is having more trouble with trash diving. In the car, Barney is a great passenger although he has only gone on short trips to date.
Barney loves being outside and barks only when the resident dogs start the chorus. He gets along well with this quartet, and he has not struck any sour notes with the resident cat. Having playmates is great fun! Barney wants to be with humans, too, and his foster family finds him to be a joy to be around.
Watch for more on Barney as he begins his heartworm treatment.
