Bandit found himself in MAESSR’s care after his owner dropped him off at a shelter in western Virginia, citing Bandit’s aversion to loud noises such as lawn mowers. He was also reported to be scared around young children and would hide in his crate.
Feeling that Bandit needed a quiet home, he made a long trek to Pennsylvania with the help of many MAESSR transport volunteers. He traveled well, except for a bit of carsickness during the last leg, and fit right into his new home. His foster parents had company that first evening and their guests thought Bandit was great!
Bandit was a very good boy for his vet visit. He was found to be in excellent health with treatment for hookworms being his only need. At 50 pounds he is a bit overweight but multiple daily walks should help with that. He also made a trip to the groomer which proved uneventful – yeah! Actually, the staff noted that he was a bit nervous at first but settled in nicely. He is very handsome now and loved posing for his pictures.
This easygoing boy has had full run of his foster home with zero accidents in the house. He was even left for 6 1/2 hours when his foster mom went to work. He likes to have his feet and belly rubbed and his foster mom can put her fingers in his food dish while he is eating. Good boy! He will try to get on the furniture and beds but a gentle “no” will get him down without a problem. At dinner time, Bandit stays about 5 feet away from the table and lays quietly without begging. He loves to look out the sliding glass doors to see what is going on but he stays very quiet. There has been no need to un-decorate the bottom of the Christmas tree either!
Bandit loves to run, sniff and DIG when he goes outside and has not tried to jump the fence. There are no dogs in Bandit’s foster home but he is getting to meet and play with many. He has a canine friend from across the street, a standard poodle, who stops by to play. The poodle loves to run too and the two play nicely together. Bandit also visited another MAESSR dog, a female, and his tail wagged the entire time! He visited the local dog park and raised his hair for a minute when he spotted 10+ dogs running around. Though he had no interest in playing with them, Bandit settled right in and liked sniffing the other dogs and the chance to run in a new place. Regarding cats, Bandit has had a brief encounter with a resident cat of the volunteer who pulled him from the shelter and he chose to ignore that one – good boy!
There are no children in his foster home but a nine year old visited Bandit, and he did great. He laid next to her while she talked to him and petted him. He will gently place his paws on his foster mom’s shoulders and he answers her with small grunts when she tells him what a good dog he is. He loves attention but doesn’t need to be next to his people at all times. He does like his alone time and, because he is so quiet, his foster parents have to look for him in the house at times. He will come happily when he hears his name.
Bandit is easy to walk on leash and loves to sniff EVERYTHING along the way. There is no hurrying with him; you just have to wait that nose out :)). He doesn’t have any interest in toys and takes a bone only after a lot of coaxing. He is a very quiet dog who only barks when he hears a stranger coming close. The only time this boy is not quiet is during the night. He is the LOUDEST snorer, canine or human, that his foster parents have ever heard. His dog bed had to be moved away from their bed so they could get some sleep :). He likes to sleep in too so, if you are not an early riser, he is the dog for you!
His foster parents are not seeing any reaction in Bandit to the sounds of loud machines. What they do see is a loving boy whose favorite thing to do is run. He would enjoy a gentle canine companion and humans who will keep him company. A fenced yard that doesn’t have to look perfect is on his wish list too!
