Bailey came to MAESSR when his owner had to move from her home to an apartment and was unable to take him along. This was a very hard decision for her since she had originally rescued Bailey from a high kill shelter in West Virginia. She knew MAESSR would find him a loving, new home.
A true Velcro Springer has emerged during the time Bailey has been with his foster family. Initially, he would bark at the resident dogs if they came close to his foster dad. His foster parents recognized that this was not true aggression towards the other dogs, but a form of resource guarding instead. They have worked with Bailey on this issue and have almost corrected this behavior completely. He still requires a stern command and correction from time to time, but he has made great progress. Bailey is extremely intelligent and willing to learn new things. Aside of this behavioral issue, Bailey is a very loving, faithful, and loyal boy. He is always close by his foster dad’s side– even sleeping as close to his pillow as possible. Bailey is very affectionate and must be close at all times. Completely housetrained, he has had no accidents even when left in the house alone for several hours. Bailey is totally trustworthy and has free run of the house when his foster parents are out. Currently, he is responsive to just “sit” and “stay.” Even though he is a bit anxious during car rides, Bailey does not want to be left behind and rides fairly well.
After Bailey and the resident Springers worked out their pecking order, he has been fine with them and enjoys playing and romping with these canine friends. He has shown no interest in cats but his original owner reported he would chase a cat if given the chance. Also, he showed some interest in some ducks perhaps awakening some of his bird dog instincts. On the two legged, wingless front, Bailey has met children as young as two while in his foster home with no problems. When someone comes to the door, he will let you know with a commanding bark that someone is there.
Bailey is not a dog for the faint of heart and will require a dog savvy person to continue with his retraining. With a little work, he will be a great companion!
