Original: “The young male was thrilled to chase this new playmate around the backyard, but Baby Roo constantly ran him ragged.”
Upon the sudden passing of her Virginia breeder, this extremely sweet Springer found herself relocated from her kennel home to a suburban household. Baby Roo was extremely quiet and guarded — for about two hours!
Upon arrival at her foster home, Baby Roo enjoyed her full grooming and inhaled all food and treats. She relished all of the attention and stood quietly for the clippers, ear cleaning, nail trimming and bathing. This sweet sprightly girl quickly decided that she was in a doggie amusement park!
The resident Springers welcomed her with open paws. The young male was thrilled to chase this new playmate around the backyard, but Baby Roo constantly ran him ragged. While she does not engage with doggie toys or the tennis balls, she loves to chase this guy everywhere. Initially, she was extremely curious about this resident, but now both are fast friends! Even the resident cat will sleep alongside this gentle newcomer.
Baby Roo has been a quick study regarding household manners. She sleeps quietly through the night, close by her dog buddies. Once morning rolls around, everyone has to be ready to go, because Baby Roo is ready for a full day of play.
Bathroom training has been a struggle due to her initial urinary tract infection and coming into heat a few weeks after she arrived. Unfortunately, Baby Roo still has urination accidents during the day, but these occur when she is overly excited. She will run outside with the other dogs and come back inside rather quickly. Right away, she has to be sent back outside to take care of business. If she is kept on a strict bathroom schedule, accidents do not occur.
Baby Roo enjoys her leash walks and will come over to her foster mom to get hitched up. During leash walks, she passes other people and dogs without much interest or reaction. Baby Roo responds to a few commands and looks to see what the other dogs are up to all the time. She knows “come,” “let’s go outside,” “let’s go kitchen,” “walk,” “leash up time,” and she is working on “sit,” “shake,” “lie down.”
Baby Roo settles down in the back seat and snoozes during car rides. She has her own spot at mealtimes and does not bother the other dogs while they are eating. She is always aware if food is in play and quickly lines up for her share of treats.
At her initial vet visit, all commented that this is an extremely sweet Springer who presented as a perfect patient. She is now finished with her treatments for bilateral ear infections, worms, and a urinary tract infection.
MAESSR requires adoptive families to take puppies through a series of obedience classes with 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places older puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with their new dog in obedience classes. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy, including an older puppy, and to raise it to be a healthy, happy and well-adjusted dog, is a serious commitment.
Baby Roo thrives on the attention from her foster mom and the other dogs. Her world is expanding every day. With patience and steady encouragement, Baby Roo will continue to blossom and prove herself a faithful companion to her people and dog buddies in her forever home.
