Correction 01/15/2024: In the original write-up, Asher’s background erroneously said that he was from a shelter in Pennsylvania. In fact, his Pennsylvania owners found that their busy lives and having a Springer puppy did not jive. They mainly crated him which they realized was no life for an active puppy. So, they relinquished him to MAESSR.
Original: “The new boy in the house engages with the resident dogs in a good game of chase and will rough house with the resident dogs. Asher runs very fast so he is always the one being chased.”
As a scared pup Asher found himself in a shelter in Pennsylvania. He was alone and unloved, not understanding how or why he ended up in that situation. The shelter reached out to MAESSR for help with this pup, Asher was picked up, and off to a new start in life
Asher’s foster mom said Asher was untrusting in the beginning. Who could blame him? He was 6 months old and already been through more than he should have expected. It didn’t take this smart boy long to realize he was in a safe place. His foster mom said once he opened up he showed he was starved for attention.
Asher quickly realized that he needed to go outside to go to the bathroom. Figuring out how to tell his foster mom that he needs to go out is a work in progress. His foster mom says he’s mostly housetrained. The only time Asher has an accident is when his foster mom isn’t paying attention.
Asher is nervous meeting new people but warms up quickly. He seems to be immature for his age due to lack of training and attention, but is very smart and is learning very quickly. He desperately wants to please and be loved.
This handsome pup is crate trained but will cry if he is crated when his foster mom is home. Asher eats in his crate and goes in willingly. He is also crated when foster mom goes out or to bed.
Animals are not allowed in the kitchen in his foster home, so Asher has had no opportunity to counter-surf or trash dive. He does love to cuddle on the couch with his foster mom or the other dogs. Asher also loves to pick a toy and play or chew a nylabone on one of the dog beds. While he does not chew inappropriately, Asher is still very much a puppy so his foster mom keeps an eye on him so he doesn’t get into trouble. He is such a good puppy and is working on his house manners including learning that it is important to keep his feet on the ground and listen to his foster mom.
Asher knows basic commands like “sit” and “come,” but is working on his attention span to stay in those positions. He tries so hard. This good boy is learning leash manners, is good in the car, and was excellent at the vet’s. He was submissive and sweet with everyone he met, showing no aggression having his ears cleaned or nails cut. A trip to the groomer’s remains in his future.
Asher loves nylabones and squeaky toys and does not have guarding issues. He will growl if one of the resident dogs try to take a bone or a toy away from him. His foster mom has no problem removing food or toys.
Asher loves other dogs. If a dog growls at Asher he will stand up for himself but will stand down when his foster mom raises her voice. The new boy in the house engages with the resident dogs in a good game of chase and will rough house with the resident dogs. Asher runs very fast so he is always the one being chased.
Asher’s dream home would be an active home with a family who wants to include Asher in their daily lives and activities and to continue to socialize and introduce him to new things so that he is well rounded and can enjoy life to the fullest with his forever family.
Note that MAESSR will require the adoptive family to take their new family member through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment.
Asher’s foster mom says he is good boy but he will require daily exercise to keep him that way.
