Original: “This cutie loves to give hugs and tries to squeeze all of his 38 pounds into his foster mom’s lap.”
Arthur came to MAESSR from a Virginia breeder. He grew up in a kennel and is now learning what it means to live in a home with stairs and toys and vacuum cleaners!
This cutie loves to give hugs and tries to squeeze all of his 38 pounds into his foster mom’s lap. He loves to get up on furniture since it means he can cuddle with his folks, but he will get down when asked. He is slowly learning how to go up and down stairs, but still wants to take the full flight of 15 stairs in a single bound—watch out for Superdog!!! Curious Arthur is very interested in anything his mom is doing and will put paws up if she’s working at the kitchen counter, sink, or kitchen table as if to say, “What ‘cha doin’??” No trash diving for this pup although he will show interest if he sees something that smells good go in the can.
Arthur barks at big noises: the dishwasher, the vacuum, the TV, the front door, the bathroom door, or when someone comes down the stairs. Unfortunately, he doesn’t bark to signal his need to go outside as housetraining for this sweet youngster is still a work in progress—he is trying, though. He always wants human company to go out back, but then he stands there as if he doesn’t know what he came out for until his mom walks out in the grass with him. He’ll catch on.
Feeding time is fun as Arthur does not resource guard and even shares his bowls with the foster family’s Siamese! Bedtime is different story. He barked for the better part of an hour during his first crate experience before being released and trying unsuccessfully to jump on the bed. With some work, he seems to be better at night in a crate in the bedroom where he can see his mom.
This little guy has not yet learned how to play! He just looks at his ball or toys wondering what they are for, but he does like his rawhide and will bark at it. Arthur runs out the door with the resident female Springer and then stands there wondering what he should do next. Squirrel chasing is not for him—good boy! He does walk nicely on a leash, barely pulling. He is good with cats, other dogs, and teenagers, but doesn’t seem to know what the younger kids are. He barks and keeps his distance from the neighbor’s grandkids and their Yorkie. Arthur rides well in the car and behaved admirably during a home grooming.
MAESSR’s wonderful little guy needs a family who will teach him to play, go for walks with him and help him through all the joys and struggles of puppyhood. MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under one year old to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption.
