Original: “Archie loves to swim, walk, and play with his toys. This boy is all about playing…. Is your household ready for an active Springer boy?”
Archie lived with two children, a boy 11 and a 9 year old girl in his Pennsylvania home. The boy played roughly with him according to dad and recently Archie had nipped at the child twice. Neither nip contacted the skin. In the first incident, the boy grabbed Archie and in the second event, the boy commanded Archie go to his kennel just when dad had just come home and Archie was very excited. Archie turned to go but when the boy turned away, Archie nipped the boy by his shirt tail. These incidents scared the boy and consequently the family has decided to relinquish Archie to MAESSR.
This high energy and exuberant fieldie is good with all people. He jumps in greeting and might knock down young children accidentally in his excitement. And he might nip them so caution should be used if there were any young children visiting. In his first home, Archie was clearly attached to the father.
In his foster home Archie lives with a 13 year old mini poodle who is clearly in charge. Archie will let the poodle eat out of his bowl and take his toys away from him. Archie really wants to play with the poodle but his playful overtures have had no positive results; he definitely respects this resident matron. He has had no exposure to cats but the owner felt he would be okay with a dog-savvy cat.
Archie is housetrained and no longer shows any submissive urination. He is crate trained too and sleeps in his crate most nights. He will go to his crate during the day for naps. Archie has full freedom in the house without any problems. Archie shows no guarding behavior over food, objects, or people. He rides well in the car both in his crate and out.
Archie has had no formal obedience training. His original owner taught him “sit,” “come,” and “paw” as well as teaching him to wait for his food using the release command “that’s good.” He pulls on lead when out on a leash walk. His previous owner admitted this lack of training was a good deal of Archie’s problem but that his son was not responsible in how he played with Archie resulting in the nipping.
This young Springer has no separation anxiety and is not afraid of loud noises. He is an alert barker, does not dig holes or beg for food nor does he counter-surf. He has not tried any fence jumping to date.
Since Archie is a fieldie, he has an easy coat that requires only brushing. He doesn’t mind it but has a hard time sitting still. He doesn’t mind having his ears and feet handled.
