Update 03/28/2016: “It allowed him to be observed in different situations that are common for Springers to experience as family members and pets. “
Additional time in MAESSR’s care allowed 2 extremely experienced foster families to meet and become acquainted with Amiri. It allowed him to be observed in different situations that are common for Springers to experience as family members and pets. As with every foster, a thorough evaluation of temperament was sought and slowly emerged for Amiri. Unfortunately, this led to understanding that he wouldn’t be suitable for adoption. God speed, Mr. A. May you find peace at the Bridge.
Original: “He greets other people and dogs with a shy tail wag and is fine with being petted by strangers.”
Two years ago, Amiri’s original family gave him to someone else. Recently, the original owners felt as though he wasn’t getting proper care so they took him back only to relinquish him to a crowded Maryland shelter where he was overwhelmed. MAESSR contacted the shelter and quickly brought Amiri into foster care.
This sweet senior is completely housetrained and generally well-behaved—except when the bread and cheese come out! Then, he’s a counter-surfer if given a chance; if someone is looking, he is polite and leaves these delicacies alone. He knows there are goodies in the trash but doesn’t bother that.
Amiri gets along with the resident dogs, though not actively engaging in play with them. He is not yet playing with toys, but has a funny quirk. If someone is snapping sticks into shorter pieces for kindling, he wants to “save” the sticks by grabbing one of the new pieces and carrying it off a few yards, and coming back for the next one. Now if only his foster folks can get him to put the pieces in the wood cart, this would be a fine trick!
Decent on leash, Amiri is always ready for a walk or trot around the neighborhood. He greets other people and dogs with a shy tail wag and is fine with being petted by strangers. In the car, he stays in the back looking out, eventually circling a few times before curling up to wait to get to his destination. At home, he flops to wait for something to happen, either on his bed or on a rug nearby his foster folks. He’s not at all needy but does adore whatever affection is offered him. When asked to sit, Amiri complies and if you rub his back, he practically purrs.
Mellow and friendly much of the time, Amiri has some fear issues if spoken to too sternly. He’s muzzled for vet and grooming because he can get defensive when scared. He doesn’t mind getting a bath, though.
This handsome guy with sweet, droopy eyes is getting further evaluation on his skin condition and his reactions to some fearful situations. Watch for updates!
