Original: Alley was surrendered by family that bought her, who thought Springers were a mellow breed! They’ve been a bit surprised. With three children under the age of four in the house and one of the two adult with allergies, they would like to find a home for Alley where she can get more attention. Alley is sweet, energetic and loving. She is great with adults and children. She is a little nervous around other dogs, but receptive. She hasn’t met many dogs. She is unknown with cats. Alley does dig some, but that has gotten better, but after all, she is a puppy. She’s not crazy about riding in the car and will cry. She never gets sick or has accidents. Alley is a wonderful girl and will make a great addition to any family. Any adopting families must commit to taking her to an obedience class within two months of adoption.
UPDATE: Alley’s owners decided that they are going to keep her and work on integrating her more fully into the family. They will be taking her to obedience class and helping her gain the skills to be a great dog. MAESSR will continue to offer whatever assistance and advice we can.
UPDATE: July 31, 1999:
Earlier this week, Alley came into rescue. Her family decided that they truly couldn’t keep her. We took her to the vet, got the last of her shots and had her spayed. She is now in foster care. She is in excellent health and has a wonderful temperament. She is initially shy around strangers, but it only takes about 30 seconds to get over. Alley is learning how to play like a dog from the other dog in the house. She is very mouthy and is being taught that this is unacceptable. This girl is smart as a whip. She learns very quickly. She does need an obedience class and lots of love. We also discovered that she does travel just fine in a car.
UPDATE: August 5, 1999:
On Tuesday, Alley, now renamed Lily, went to live with her new family. She has a Lab brother, a fenced-in yard, a doggie door and doting parents. They have already signed her up for obedience training.
UPDATE: From her adoptive family: Lilly spent her first two weeks getting settled into our house (and terrorizing it occasionally). She learned to use the “doggie door” in about ten minutes and was getting very comfortable with her new brother Alex (chocolate lab). We bought her a new crate, toys, bowl, and bedding. Her first weekend we took her with us to the beach, where she performed flawlessly!!! Next it was a trip to the vet. for shots and kennel cough + the always pleasant anal cleaning!! Last Thursday evening we took the two dogs to the bay, where Lilly jumped right in and, while not swimming, certainly waded in belly deep water and enjoyed herself.
I had the unpleasant task on Friday, of taking her to a kennel to begin two weeks of intensive obedience training…(She desperately needs this as she is sometimes uncontrollable in the house and really has no “house manners”.) Nevertheless, it was very hard for me to leave her there…she seemed very frightened. I know this is for the best though. We will go back this Friday and to review her progress and work with her. Then it is another week spent there until her graduation day (hopefully) on August 27. All of this doesn’t come cheap, but I believe Lilly is well worth the $…
This kennel also has agility classes that will be starting in October. You and your dog go one night a week for 8 weeks…I am hopeful Lilly and I can do this together. I think she would be great…she is very quick, agile, and strong.
I really love this little girl.
