AK and his brother Henry came into MAESSR’s care when surrendered by their owner for financial reasons. AK is a beautiful black and white bench bred Springer who is well nourished and very healthy. He is also well-groomed and seems to be quite intelligent. AK appears to be housetrained, having had no accidents in his foster home.
The area in which AK seems to be lacking is his socialization. In his former home, it is presumed that AK and Henry were put out in the yard in the morning, had access to the back porch, and slept in a crate together at night.
The adjustment to a new home and the loss of his brother have been difficult for AK. However, after a week of not eating or drinking much, and hiding in the corner, AK has started to improve. He loves the attention he is receiving, and with each passing day, he chooses to spend more time with his foster mom and dad. His foster parents have tried to work more on bonding with him than command skills, but they can see he seems to know “sit” and “stay”.
AK is tentative when other humans enter the house, but he does sniff them out and accepts their petting him. Loud noises seem to bother him, but not excessively.
At this point AK seems to do well with two adults in his life, and, with no other dogs nor children around. When another dog came to visit the foster home, there was some lip curling and growling on AK’s part. His foster parents think that with children, AK would not be aggressive, but would be terribly scared and backing into a corner. With the patience and love of his foster family, AK should continue to gain confidence and comfort in his new surroundings. His adoptive family will need to continue this socialization as he grows into his forever home.
