Original: “Aedin is still very much a puppy with much to learn about his new world.”
When his Maryland owner found that he did not have adequate time to devote to his Springer puppy, he contacted MAESSR knowing we could find Aedin a good home. So, Aedin became a MAESSR pup.
Aedin was born last June, so he was just one year old when he arrived at his foster home. His first visit to the vet showed that he was negative for heartworm and parasites; however, he was only 20 pounds. The vet estimates he needs to gain 15 to 18 pounds for his frame and size. He will need to gain weight so that he can be neutered and complete his schedule of vaccinations. He is eating several times a day and putting on weight thanks to the extra high calorie food and extra special fillers being added to his bowl.
This sweet boy is extremely under-socialized and is frightened of everything. His foster mom is taking him everywhere she can and he is making progress; but, in a second for no clear reason, he can revert back and take off running to find a safe corner to curl up in. This boy is going to need a very dog-savvy home with a great deal of patience to work with his gradual forward movement and occasional back slides. The end result is going to be a wonderful dog. For this reason, active homes with children would not be the right placement for Aedin.
Although he is walking better on a leash, Aedin can be easily spooked by a passing truck, motorcycle, loud bang, etc. A firm grip on his leash and a collar or harness that he cannot back out of will be critical. Aedin’s first bath was a struggle. He could not tolerate the dryers or the clippers. His foster mom has worked over several weeks to cut some mats out, but he is scared of anything coming at him. She is working to have him tolerate brushing as a starting point.
Aedin does not like the pool yet, but is coming up on the deck and he managed to stay above water when he fell in before he was safely scooped out. He loves running and playing tug with his 18 month old foster sister. In general the other dogs in the house are teaching him boundaries and some limits. They have taught him to sit nicely for a treat when he comes in, but he is eager to get his cookie! Now if they could just teach him proper potty habits… He’s working on his housetraining and improving, but it is still a work in progress. This cutie also is learning that proper house manners include no counter-surfing or trash diving! Although Aedin will get on furniture, he quickly hops off when asked.
Aedin is still very much a puppy with much to learn about his new world. Potential adopters should note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and under to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. By taking these classes and receiving strong guidance and love from his adoptive family, Aedin will learn how to reach his full potential as a super Springer boy.
