Original: Abby and her sister Dede were taken to the shelter because their owner didn’t have time for them. In their previous home they were around children from age toddler to teen. They also lived with cats.
Abby is a very loving girl. She follows her foster mom around and loves to lie at her feet. She gets along well with her sister and foster family’s dog. She is also very good around the children in the foster home (ages 7, 12 and 15). She is very friendly to everyone she meets. She is housebroken, crate trained, and walks pretty well on the leash. In her previous home she was gated in the kitchen when alone. The foster family crates her but she could probably have the run of the house with no problem. She is a little weak in the command department but does know sit. When she is outside, she stays close to her family and will come when called if she wanders off a little. She is not really good at catch but likes to play chase with the other dogs.
Abby came to the shelter with extremely long hair and plenty of mats. One of our volunteers has given her a haircut and she is much more comfortable. She is being treated for infected ears and is scheduled to have a lump removed from her back on Aug. 15th.
Abby’s favorite thing in the whole world is to sit by your feet and have her ears rubbed.
Update: 10/02/02: Abby is doing great. She is an easy girl. She loves everybody and thinks it’s everyone’s job to scratch her ears whenever possible. I don’t know how she does it but even if she is in another room if I so much think about petting Cassie she is right in front of me to let me know that she needs attention too!!
She loves to chase squirrels out of the yard, she likes to fetch tennis balls but she would rather chew them than bring them back. When she first came she would tear apart anything that the kids left in the yard but now she doesn’t touch anything that doesn’t belong to the dogs. She is a grass eater and likes to snack on flower pedals and acorns. She will sometimes drop the acorns when I tell her to but if she doesn’t drop them she will let me fish them out of her mouth with no problem.
She goes into her crate when told. I leave her in the crate when I work but for shorter errands I leave her to run the main level. We do have 2 guinea pigs in the basement that she shows a little too much interest in so I limit her access to the basement.
We took her to my son’s soccer game on Sunday. The 2 younger kids took her to the playground and put her on the slide. They say she liked it and went down twice.
Abby would be the perfect dog for a not too active family. I think she would be ok as an only dog or as part of a multi-dog family. She ignores cats. She can play if you want but she also understands that lying around quietly is ok too. She likes to go for walks and is good on the leash. She also is always ready for a car ride and is a very good passenger. She acts much younger than a 7 year old.
Update: Abby happily went to her new family!
