Update 09/03/09: Pretty, pretty Abby is back in MAESSR’s hands through no fault of her own. Unfortunately, there have been some major health issues in her adopting family. Abby remains in good health. She is currently being treated for a urinary tract infection which should clear quickly with antibiotics.
Like most springers, Abby adapts, without difficulty, to changes in her life. Since settling in her foster home, it’s easy to see that Abbey is as sweet, and loving, as she ever was. She has the true Springer personality of loving everyone and always being happy. This great girl is going to be a fantastic addition to some lucky family.
Take a closer look at her photos. The gentle, steady look in her eyes says it all. This is the feeling Abby brings to those around her. For the family with a mellow resident dog that needs, or simply enjoys, canine companionship, Abby would be perfect. For the senior citizen whose home is a bit too quiet, Abby would be perfect. For any ESS devotee whose energy level is a good match for senior springers, Abby would be perfect. Take another look, and don’t miss giving Abby the chance to bring her best to your home.
Original:
Abby’s life took an unexpected turn recently with the hospitalization of her owner. Abby and her kennel mate, Toby, had lived their whole lives well-cared for and loved. Not knowing where else to turn, the family relinquished Abby and Toby to a shelter in southern New Jersey. Luckily for them, MAESSR volunteers discovered these two sweeties right away. Both dogs were quickly taken into foster care.
Poor Abby arrived a little overwhelmed at her foster home, resembling a big, fuzzy sheep. She wasn’t too sure about getting into the tub at first, but she then relaxed and enjoyed the pampering. After several rounds of scrubbing, Abby smelled, and looked, much more like the beautiful lady she is. A trip to the groomers found a trim dog under all that hair and emphasized Abby’s gorgeous freckles and ticking.
A trip to the vet found Abby to be a very healthy girl. Her spay incontinence is easily controlled by an inexpensive daily medication. One night on meds found her dry the next morning. Her only medical need is a thorough dental cleaning. Her teeth seem a bit tender right now, so Abby’s foster mom has been putting hot water on her food to soften it.
It is very obvious that Abby was well loved in her former life. She is a wonderful houseguest. She lets her foster family know when she needs to go out and uses the bathroom in 30 seconds flat. A good trait to have in the winter! Her foster mom hasn’t found any bad habits such as trash diving, counter surfing, or getting on the furniture.
Abby is very docile and accepts her place as lowest member of the pack with good grace. She is living with two resident female Springers, ages 5 and 10. All three ladies get along very well and coexist peacefully. Abby will accept being gated in the kitchen by herself without a complaint. She quickly learned to use her foster family’s dog door and goes in and out during the day. She was good when crated at the groomers but, because she is so good in the house, she hasn’t used one in her foster home. Abby loves riding in the car and sits quietly looking out the window.
Toys or balls in her foster home don’t interest Abby. Her most exciting find has been the resident cat. Abby is so funny with her. The cat is an old hand at foster dogs. She was patient and let Abby sniff and get to know her without running away. Abby will wag her tail and follow her around with complete adoration. When the cat has had enough of Abby’s devotion, she will push her away with a paw to Abby’s nose as to say “Enough!” Abby takes this with good humor and backs away without being asked twice.
When Abby sees a camera, she will go and hide. She does not like having her picture taken. She is somewhat shy in the yard too while getting used to her foster mom’s invisible fence. At times Abby is unsure of some new things, but this sweetie is doing very well for a senior lady with such a major upheaval in her life. She will lean in with her whole body for complete body rubs. Abby quickly found that the resident teenage girl has a big heart. She brought Abby into her bedroom when Abby looked lonely in the kitchen on the first night. Abby has slept by her bedside on a big comfy dog bed every night since.
Abby is a loving girl who is looking for a forever home through her golden years. In return she will be a loving, devoted companion in just about any situation. Do you have room in your home and heart for this sweet senior lady?
