Original: “Abby is a sweet dog who loves attention and is extremely well-behaved.”
When her Virginia kennel owner died, Abby and her six puppies came into MAESSR’s care. She was such a good mom and the pups all got great homes. Now it is her turn. Since they were adopted out, Abby has been able to explore life outside of being a mom and is learning how to be a dog.
Abby is a well-behaved dog, but is not housetrained and does not signal when she needs to go outside. Her foster parents are working on this, taking her out frequently. Even so, she still has accidents in the house several times a week. Otherwise, she has nice house manners. She does not chew inappropriately and does not counter-surf. Abby seems to not know how to jump which means she does not get on furniture without help. When she first came to her foster home, she didn’t understand how to climb stairs. She has since learned to walk up the few porch steps at her foster home, but still will not use a larger staircase. Very calm and gentle, Abby will offer calm and gentle “woos” at dinner time.
At home, Abby is fed next to the resident Springers and they all eat nicely together. During her latest stint at motherhood, Abby grew thin so now she is gaining slowly to a healthier weight. She does not guard her food, her treats, or any toys. She will only play with a chew bone and will share if one of the other dogs decides he or she wants it. When her foster family is out, Abby stays in a crate, as do the other dogs. She will often go in her crate while her family is at home as well.
There’s nothing Abby likes more than cuddles with her humans. The resident Springers have adopted her as part of their pack, and she also gets along nicely with the resident cats. Abby also enjoys alone time in her crate, but sleeps with the humans at night.
Abby does learn quickly; she mastered “sit” in an afternoon. When taken for a walk, she behaves nicely on the leash with no pulling. If she and her human meet someone on their travels, she shies away from being petted. If they stay to chat for long enough, she will warm up to her new friends. Although she rides peacefully in the car, she does get carsick and vomits almost immediately.
A very good girl at the vet, Abby is shy in the exam room but after being given a few treats, she will come around and enjoy the love and attention she gets from the vet and staff. Most of the time, however, she spends on the floor asleep. A trip to the vet does not bother her at all. While being examined, she is completely calm and submits to the process. This includes having her ears handled and nails cut. She exhibits the same behavior with the groomer.
Abby is a sweet dog who loves attention and is extremely well-behaved. She would love a forever home where the humans have a lot of time to devote to her. She isn’t hard to care for, but because of her past life as a kennel dog, she wants A LOT of attention. Although she is very needy, she is extremely calm and gentle, and gets along with everyone, human or animal.
