Abby was in a shelter in North Carolina, complete with a mug shot in the frequent offender club. The last time she was picked up, the owner stated that she wasn’t wanted back. There were no vet records, name, or information on her other than that she was running with a Golden Retriever brother; both were repeat offenders. This little jail bird is a Boykin Spaniel mix.
A MAESSR volunteer has since learned from a third party who knew the owner that this sweet girl is roughly four years old and was kept outside in a kennel. The previous owner said she would chew through boards and wire mesh; her front teeth are ground down from her chewing.
Abby has been to the vet and currently is up to date on all shots. She’s in overall good health. The vet did hear an abnormality in her heart and did an EKG showing more than normal blood flow into the heart; but could not find an explanation for this. Abby was recently spayed and was hooked up to an EKG before, during, and after her surgery. Her EKG was normal. The vet believes that Abby was a very stressed dog during her first exam. She did great through her surgery and has a clean bill of health.
There are two resident Springers in her foster home and Abby gets along with them, playing and being a member of the pack. There has been no resource guarding, food aggression, or negative behaviors observed.
It is obvious that Abby had not been a house dog. She had to be invited into her foster home the first time but now comes in and out, undoubtedly happy to be a part of the household. She is housetrained and has had no accidents in the house. Good girl, Abby! When her foster parents are not home, Abby is kept in the master bedroom with the two resident pups. She sleeps in her crate at night as five bodies in the bed is just a bit too much!
Abby had her first spa day and did very well. She walks on a leash but does pull. She is a bit nervous in the car but does well and does not bark. She has played nicely with an 8-year old girl next door. The toy baskets have been discovered and Abby has started to take an interest in the toys.
Abby loves the fenced yard and plays with the resident Springers. There have been no issues with chewing the fence. Abby has a great recall. A stern “COME” and she is sitting at her foster parents’ feet. She knows “sit” and will go “down” after a few tries. Abby is learning “sit and wait” to come inside and to receive her dinner.
Abby’s spaniel personality is Velcro like a Springer – she just wants to be where the people are. She gives awesome hugs and loves to lie at her human’s feet. This sweet, loving girl will be a welcome addition to any home. She would prefer an active family and a fenced yard. This Cinderella is looking for her new castle.
