Update 09/25/08:
Some dogs endure incredible neglect and manage incredible turnarounds when given proper care. Others struggle and find recovery beyond reach. Sadly, for Abbie, treatment was not bringing a better life.
Abbie and her foster family worked and worked on the yeast infection that seemed to consume her. Her skin was getting better but her ears would not clear up. When the matter in her ears was cultured, it turned out to be an MRSA staff infection. Such infections are resistant to many antibiotics commonly used to treat dogs and can be fatal, even without other complications.
She also seemed to have more and more difficulty with walking. When x-rays were done of Abbie’s spine, they showed she had major arthritis and spondylosis, a spinal degeneration that commonly occurs with aging. Several medications were tried in the effort to make her more comfortable but she had reached the point that she could not walk up two steps.
Despite so many obstacles going against her, Abbie remained a true Springer sweetheart. It was her very poor quality of life that led to the decision to let her go to the Rainbow Bridge.
Original:
Abbie was turned in to a vet’s office in Virginia to be put to sleep. Her owners said that they could not afford to pay for the medical care necessary to get her healthy. The vet hospital refused to put her down and the owner turned her over to the vet hospital. The vet then started treatment and contacted MAESSR. Abbie had a case of severe yeast infection all over her body. This generally happens when a dog does not receive proper care and does not get fed a decent dog food. Abbie also had some broken and worn teeth. MAESSR brought her into a foster home to continue her recovery from severe neglect.
In her previous home, Abbie had been living outside with other dogs. When she walked into her foster home, she was thrilled to be in a house! Her house manners are perfect and she has not had one accident. Abbie sleeps on a dog bed beside her foster parents’ bed. It is just amazing that this girl is in such pain, but she wags her tail the entire time you are working with her to try to get her healthy. She is the perfect example of Springer love and trust. This girl will be a fantastic addition to any family.
Please watch for updates on Abbie as she recovers.
