Update 08/28/09: Miss Abbey’s outing to the vet went nicely. She did very well during the trip there, just laying down for the ride. Once in the vet’s office, she was a little leery of the exam table and all the new people but again, she just laid down. There was no pulling on her leash, and she was quite cooperative as the vet checked her over. She has yeasty ears that need treatment, and she will benefit from a dental to remove plaque and put a shine on her teeth. Beyond these minor needs, Abbey’s general health is very good.
This sweet middle age lady is almost ready for some lucky family to make her their own. She has no special requirements and only needs loving people to make her life complete!
Original: Unfortunate circumstances forced Abbey’s owner to give her up to a good friend. Although the friend liked Abbey very much, her lab was quite jealous, made life unpleasant for Abbey, and made it virtually impossible for her to get any attention. Knowing that Abbey deserved a better living situation, the friend contacted MAESSR for help finding Abbey the loving, peaceful home she deserves.
Abbey is initially timid and submissive around new dogs and strangers and warms up to them gradually as she develops a sense of trust in them. If she feels uncomfortable in her interaction with people or dogs, Abbey just cowers and rolls over. Daily, she seems more comfortable in her foster home with its elderly resident dogs, cats, and with her loving foster parents. She does not play with toys and does not engage in play with the other dogs yet, but this may change once she gets a little more used to them.
This pretty little girl has lovely house manners. She is housebroken and when she needs to go out, she runs to the door to let her foster family know. There is no counter surfing or garbage raiding for Abbey. When her foster parents are eating, she sits nearby and watches. If she is told “no”, she will go lie down. When her foster parents are not home, she has full run of the house, and she is very reliable. When they return, she runs to greet them. At bedtime, Abbey likes to sleep in her foster parent’s room on a rug. She has a dog bed but has not attempted to use it.
According to her relinquishing friend, Abbey is good on the leash and will stay close by if she is off leash. Her foster parents have not had her on leash walks yet, as they have a fenced-in back yard where Abbey, and the other dogs, go for exercise. Her forever family will probably want to work with her on basic obedience since the only commands Abbey knows are sit and no, and even these need work. She is not a high energy dog; she just sleeps or relaxes around the house during the day, getting up when she has to go out, eat, or follow her foster mom around. One thing that Abbey does not like is being picked up; that makes her fearful.
Abbey is a very sweet girl who needs time to trust again. She loves to snuggle and needs lots of attention. Her ideal loving forever home could have a dog or two that are also friendly and submissive. These would provide Abbey with canine companionship, especially when left home alone. No dominant dogs, please! Do you have this kind of home for sweet, quiet Abbey?
