Ruby was relinquished to a New Jersey shelter because the owner was not taking proper care of her. She weighed 23 pounds. The shelter contacted MAESSR for help.
Ruby has not had a lot of exposure to things in the world. She becomes a little amped up in new situations but is learning to settle quickly. Her foster mom started her on a low dose of an inexpensive supplement for her anxiety and it is helping.
This sweet girl is crate trained but will cry and bark for the first few minutes in the crate. She then calms down and goes to sleep. She sleeps on a dog bed beside her foster parents’ bed at night. She would prefer to be in the big bed, but there is not room—sorry, Ruby!
Since she has had little practice, Ruby pulls on the leash when walking. Her foster mom believes that with more experience she will be okay. She is just so excited about everything and wants to see it all at once.
Note that MAESSR will require Ruby’s adoptive family to take her through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment.
Ruby is also learning about riding in the car. She is settling in and really starting to enjoy it but will need to be tethered in the car so she does not try to help drive.
Some house manners are a work in progress as this new girl in the home will counter-surf. She quickly gets down when told with a stern NO that it is not acceptable.
Ruby’s had a hard life so far but is a sweet cuddle bug that needs a family that will be firm with her while teaching her boundaries.
