Update 10/04/08:
Joe has recently moved to another foster home for more in-depth training. He now loves going into his crate. He sleeps in his crate all night but, like most springers, definitely wants to be out and with you when it’s time to get up. He has full run of his new foster home and has not had any accidents. This is the sweetest, softest Springer his foster mom has seen in a while!
Since arriving in his new foster home, Joe has had his dental work completed. The surgery included pulling EIGHT teeth. Poor boy :((. The good news is that Joe definitely feels about a million percent better now. He will be back to eating dry kibble in a couple of days.
Whichever family chooses to bring Joe into their home will be getting a really wonderful boy – wouldn’t you love that to be you?!
Update 09/23/08:
Joe is an absolute love. He is so friendly and sweet and really enjoys his people time. He is very soft. Even at the mildest reprimand, he becomes submissive. There does not seem to be an aggressive bone in his body!
His housetraining is coming along slowly. He has progressed to the point that if caught making a bad choice, he stops. He does not keep on wetting and has his foster mom thinking this may be a marking thing which should diminish with his neutering. Joe does love his treats so that will help with any continuing obedience work. He is a little charmer as well as a work in progress. Joe can easily slip right in with many a family but will do best with one that will work with him a bit and bring out his best. Don’t miss the chance to love and be loved by Joe :)).
Original:
Joe and his running companion Gracie 9 were picked up by animal control and taken to a Virginia shelter. MAESSR came to their rescue and their foster mom brought them home. Joe hates to be crated and fussed at being confined that way in the car. His foster mom is going to work with him on crating so that he can see that a crate is a good place to hang out. Short car rides to fun places will be in Joe’s future too so he can learn to enjoy riding in the car.
Joe is a big softie! He loves everyone and is very gentle. He gets along with the resident dogs and cats. Although he has not been around small children while he has been in foster care, his foster mom doubts whether Joe would have any problems with kids. She will be testing him with some of my friends’ children soon. He was wonderful at the vet’s office, allowing them to do whatever they needed without fussing. The vet found that he had some abscessed teeth which will be pulled when Joe is neutered. Other teeth are very worn. He also still has his back dewclaws.
Joe is still not housebroken, but his foster mom is working with him on this. He is highly food motivated, so he should not be too hard to train. He is leash broken and does not pull on the leash. Joe will make a wonderful companion. He should be placed, however, with someone who has the time to work with him on some basic obedience and who has patience to help him work through his crate issues. With the right loving home, Joe’s days of running away will be over.
