Featured Library Titles
SEPARATION ANXIETY AND TREATMENT PROTOCOLS by Dr. Nicholas Dodman. Separation anxiety is a problem that affects up to 15% of the 18 million dogs in the United States. The causes, diagnosis and treatment of separation anxiety will be discussed. Though there are new FDA approved drug treatments for separation anxiety, none is a panacea and separation anxiety remains a tricky problem to resolve. State of the art treatments and their efficacy will be discussed in this talk. Donated by Phyllis Chan.
HOW TO FOSTER DOGS: FROM HOMELESS TO HOMEWARD BOUND (158 pages) by Pat Miller, CPDT-KA,CBCC-KA, is is the first book on the market to deal specifically with the care and training needs of foster dogs and how the fostering process works when done through a formal arrangement with an organization like a shelter or breed rescue group. The author talks about the most common behavioral issues facing foster dogs and puppies including fear and separation anxiety, a likely undeserved reputation for what may have been perceived as “dominance,” and irritating but usually solvable problems such as house soiling, chewing and barking. There are strategies on how to successfully integrate a foster dog into your home if you own other dogs. You will also learn how to prepare to say goodbye to your foster best friend knowing that you have done your best to build a bridge to a better future for him or her.
Library Wish Lists
The TRAINING LIBRARY has TWO Wish Lists. New or used titles can be purchased from the Amazon list; Dogwise has new books and DVDs. Purchases can be shipped directly to the library. Pretty quick and easy way to help out MAESSR as well as educate adopters!
Rainbow Bridge Crossings
AVA 2, a sproodle, came to MAESSR with her sister Zsa Zsa from a VA breeder who was downsizing her program. As a permanent foster, she had been living a pretty good life with her foster DEBBIE LIPCSEY. Ava had lived in a kennel environment all of her life but quickly adjusted to life inside her foster parents’ home and found her favorite place to be – on the sofa! Recently she started slowing down, and her heart issues were getting worse. To complicate things, an anal tumor was discovered, and surgery was an impossibility due to her heart. She was starting to get more uncomfortable so the decision was made to send her to the bridge so she could run wild and free without pain. Debbie says, “Ava, we miss you. You were a special little girl.”
CHARLIE 30 came to MAESSR in February when his elderly owner could no longer care for him & became CANDI LYNN’s permanent foster at age 15. He was an exceptional dog who settled into his new home quite readily! A special bond was formed between Charlie & Candi. He was a happy & loving boy who provided happiness, companionship & lots of love. Time is sometimes not a friend, but Charlie aged gracefully until quality of life took over. Charlie is now springing across those green fields with the rest of Candi’s pack while Candi holds him in her heart for eternity! Charlie thanks MAESSR, Candi, and especially Stanglein Vet Clinic, for their excellent care in his final days.
