Oreo was relinquished to MAESSR by a Pennsylvania family with six children under twelve and probably with very little time for him as a developing puppy.
Although his first eight months would have been an excellent time for training, retrieving, and obedience, Oreo’s family did not have time for this. However, Oreo is a very intelligent, intuitive youngster. He knows his name, sits, and is very aware of all activities going on. He does not pull on leash. Oreo is housebroken for the most part, but he will have accidents if given the run of the house. He keeps his crate dry. Oreo’s house manners are fairly good for a young Springer. He does not trash pick. He will go up and check out a counter, but not truly surf it. If told “no,” he will stop. He is very affectionate with his people and gentle with children.
Oreo is the youngest dog in a household of three resident Springers of which there are two females and a male. He has had some typical dominant issues with the youngest female, a four-year-old, and adapted very well. Oreo has shown curiosity with the elderly resident cat, but has not been aggressive or prey driven. A younger, spookier kitty might elicit a chase response in Oreo whereas this self-assured cat dispels it.
At feeding time, Oreo is easily distracted from his food by any movement and needs to be redirected back to his bowl. He is not food-oriented, but is just a tall skinny youngster interested in everything around him. He enjoys his toys and will go to them when told. He will select shoes and socks and carry them off but does not chew them. He will take catalogues – particularly LL Bean – and other paper and chew a corner. He will stop when told and the item is easily retrieved and his attention redirected to a proper toy. He is not fond of his crate or crating but will go in if encouraged with no urgency. He stays in crate with a little yelping but soon settles down. He has never been crated for more than four hours in his foster home.
Oreo is a little mouthy particularly when in competition with the resident Springers when his foster mom or dad arrives home and the pack is excited and glad to be with their people. He calms down when told “no”. Everyday, Oreo goes for walks at a large park with his foster siblings and foster mom and he is allowed off leash. He stays close, investigates interesting scents with his foster sister, wades into the water, and comes when called. If his foster mom drops to one knee when calling Oreo, he responds even more quickly. He is good in the car, too.
Oreo is a lovely boy who needs a family and good training to develop into a super Springer. He is extremely sensitive to his family movements and strives to be a part of any activity. He even tries to be leader! Oreo is a good natured, fairly well-rounded young Springer. He is very social and would do well with a canine sibling or children in his forever home. His foster family enjoys him very much! Oreo is a good little guy with great possibilities.
