Download the app for your cell phone and follow the directions. (If Wooftrax doesn’t come up, look for Walk For A Dog.) When asked to pick a shelter/rescue (it may show the one closest to your home, but ask to change) pick VA as the site, scroll to the M’s and select MAESSR. You will then be asked to verify your email address. Keep following directions, and the app will appear on your phone’s screen. When you tap it, enter your dog’s info and start walking. It is a simple process each time you go for a walk. Currently we have 26 active walkers. Spread the word – make your walks count!

FACING FAREWELL: MAKING THE DECISION TO EUTHANIZE YOUR PET (71 pages) by Julie Reck, DVM. Be informed before you bid farewell to your pet. One of the most difficult aspects of being a pet owner is making end of life decisions for beloved dogs and cats. While many end up deciding to “put their pet to sleep,” the euthanasia procedure remains a mystery for most people adding to the stress and fear an owner experiences at this critical time. Author Julie Reck is a veterinarian who has devoted her professional career to helping owners make more informed decisions about euthanasia. In Facing Farewell, you will be provided with a complete description of the euthanasia procedure so that you will know what to expect and be confident that you have made the right choice for both you and your pet. You will learn about: The symptoms of pain and discomfort pets display as they approach the end of life; Information you should gather and share with your veterinarian as well as questions you should ask you vet about how she conducts a euthanasia procedure; What options are available in terms of medications and techniques used during euthanasia so you can be a more informed advocate for your pet; What happens when in detail during euthanasia so that you will know what to expect. Donated by Pam Nealer.
FIRED UP, FREAKED OUT, AND FRANTIC: TRAINING CRAZY DOGS FROM OVER-THE-TOP TO UNDER CONTROL (174 pages) by Laura VanArendonk Baugh. Some dogs need a little help. Some dogs are afraid, or excited, or reactive. Dogs that “don’t listen” and “go crazy” don’t live the lives we – or they – want. Some dogs need a little help. Fired Up, Frantic, and Freaked Out can change that. Simple steps and an accessible, conversational tone from award-winning, internationally-known trainer Laura VanArendonk Baugh CPDT-KA KPACTP make calming the agitated dog not only possible, but pleasant. Inside you’ll learn how to: Achieve change in short, simple training sessions of a minute or less; Maximize the effects of natural brain chemistry; Know when to call in medical help; “Clean up” unreliable behaviors in both overexcited sport dogs and pets at home; Recognize how fear, aggression, and excitement are variants of the same root problem. The conversational tone is both informative and fun — very accessible, and it feels like the reader has a consulting trainer standing at her shoulder! Bring your dog from emotional to thoughtful, and enjoy a calmer, more enriched life with your best friend. Donated by Phyllis Chan in honor of Shirley the Cocker Spaniel.
Library Wish Lists
The TRAINING LIBRARY has TWO Wish Lists. New or used titles can be purchased from the Amazon list; Dogwise has new books and DVDs. Purchases can be shipped directly to the library. Pretty quick and easy way to help out MAESSR as well as educate adopters!
Rainbow Bridge Crossings
LILY (LENNY, class of 2015) came into MAESSR’s care at age six along with her mother, Lady when their family, an older couple in NJ, were having mobility issues. She was fostered by DEBBIE LIPSCEY and adopted by JANET AND PAUL SMITH. When Lily joined their family she suffered from fear aggression. Her past did not include any visits to a vet. So, a trip to the vet was initially quite an ordeal. Patience, time and treats turned her into the sweetest girl imaginable. They were grateful to have her live to almost 15 1/2, before a recurrence of lymphoma. With great sadness she joined their previous springers. Lily was the best, RIP.
OREO 25 (class of 2016) came to MAESSR as a three-year-old with his biological brother Rascal when his WV owner died. He was fostered by DEBBIE LIPCSEY and adopted by CARRIE CICUTO’s family where he lived his best life. Oreo went to sleep to be able to run and play again without pain. To say his family adored him wouldn’t even do the words justice. He was always number one in his crew and loved by so many. Carrie is forever grateful for MAESSR always finding the perfect fit of dogs for their world and sends her family’s and Oreo’s gratitude for the journey he had for years in their home.
