Featured Library Titles
NEW TO THE LIBRARY! THE FOREVER DOG: SURPRISING NEW SCIENCE TO HELP YOUR CANINE COMPANION TO LIVE YOUNGER, HEALTHIER & LONGER (433 pages) by Rodney Habib & Dr. Karen Shaw Becker. Every single pet parent wishes their best furry friends could live forever. We know that’s not really possible, but we want to do everything in our power to keep our doggos thriving for as long as possible. The Forever Dog is a pathbreaking guide to teach us how to delay aging and provide a long, happy, healthy life for our beloved canine companions. This definitive dog-care guide empowers us with the knowledge we need to make wise choices, and to keep our dogs healthy and happy for years to come. Donated by Cathy Moyer.
DESENSITIZING FEAR AND BUILDING CONFIDENCE (90 m.) by Dr. Ian Dunbar. Dr. Dunbar has always felt that with the exception of play aggression, most dog bites are fear-based. However, regardless of how the dog’s “aggression” has been classified (e.g., dominant, fearful, maternal or idiosyncratic), his training protocols are always the same, comprising, classical conditioning, progressive desensitization and teaching basic manners for better control and to increase confidence and pro-social behavior. Donated by Phyllis Chan.
Library Wish Lists
The TRAINING LIBRARY has TWO Wish Lists. New or used titles can be purchased from the Amazon list; Dogwise has new books and DVDs. Purchases can be shipped directly to the library. Pretty quick and easy way to help out MAESSR as well as educate adopters!
Rainbow Bridge Crossings
In April 2020, MAESSR was contacted by the Warwick Valley Humane Society regarding 11 dogs that they had seized from an irresponsible breeding situation and asked if MAESSR could foster these dogs until the case went to trial. MAESSR began to get those dogs out of the shelter in NY and into foster homes. Because MAESSR volunteers are amazing at what they do, this was a seamless process, and the dogs were quickly settled. Because of the pandemic, the courts were very backed up, and the trial did not begin until January 2022. There were hearings and appeals, and more appeals, and after what seemed like forever, on April 22, 2023 Lauretta and Daniel Duthie of Laurdan Kennels were convicted of overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals, and failure to provide proper sustenance in violation of the State Agriculture and Markets law. It wasn’t until March 8, 2024, that they registered, and the dogs were turned over to MAESSR. Of the 11 dogs, Star, Cameron, Hunter, and Winston crossed the bridge but spent their last days knowing love and compassion from their foster families. Today we have Star 7’s story.
Former show dog STAR 7, fostered by PAT JAEGER, was a funny, high maintenance boy who liked to do things his way! Very vocal, Star would let his foster parents know what he needed or wanted by barking. They got fairly good at reading his mind and his barks. Because of an enlarged testicle and tumor, Star’s hormones were all out of kilter. For low thyroid levels, he was placed on thyroid medication; his otherwise beautiful coat had large balding spots. Although this senior was arthritic, he loved his walks and being outside. He’d sometimes have to give visiting deer a good chase and he loved the snow in winter. He was kept on a long lead when his foster mom had him outside with her, but if she forgot to leash him, he could always be found at his next-door neighbor’s house, sitting on her steps and barking for a treat. Star loved all the neighbors and all of them loved him. At one hot summer barbecue, Star put his front legs into an ice chest to cool himself off in the cold water! After his fourteenth birthday, Star began to slow and he did not want to go too far on walks. His passing in 2022 took his foster parents by surprise. Despite his problems, he was a handsome, loving old boy whom his foster parents love and miss even now.

We’re on Mastodon now! Twitter throttles low-follower accounts, making it pointless for us to post there. Come on over to Mastodon and discover lots of other wonderful animal rescue groups, dog owners, and shelters, and posts on any topic you can think of. It works much like Twitter, so the format will be familiar.
