BLIND DEVOTION: ENHANCING THE LIVES OF BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED DOGS (227 pages) by Cathy Symons CVT CCRP. For millions of people their pet is a beloved member of the family. For these people the loss of a pet’s vision can be especially difficult. Blind Devotion is a book these people can turn to. The author connects with her audience by sharing a touching, warm story of her own blind pug dog. Cathy Symons uses her vast experience as a veterinary technician and canine rehabilitation practitioner to offer advice on caring for a blind dog and enhancing their lives through environmental enrichment vital to maintaining a joyful life. Ms. Symons educates the reader on what it means to be blind, how to keep your pet safe, how to stimulate other senses, making life enjoyable for your pet and developing new commands. The author also discusses difficult topics such as quality of life, commitment, anxiety, enucleation, and addressing owner emotions. By sharing her story the author offers reassurance and guidance, shares ideas, and gives hope. Donated by Barb Moyer and Carol & Gary Davis.
COLD NOSES AND WARM HEARTS (232 pages) by a compilation of great authors. When originally published in 1959, this marvelous collection of dog stories compiled by the late humorist Corey Ford was an immediate bestseller. For this edition, Ford selected pieces written by his friends and peers whose names appeared on the mastheads of The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Life, and Colliers, including such greats as Thurber, Benchley, Wodehouse, White, Woollcott, and Marquis. Ford also provided balance with stories from Steinbeck, Lardner, Lawrence and others, including his own superbly poignant, original version of his classic short, The Road to Tinkhamtown. All the stories in Cold Noses and Warm Hearts share the same theme, whether underscored by humor or deep emotion: the strong, enigmatic bond between dog and master. Laurie Morrow is the official biographer of Dartmouth College, Corey Ford Archives, and is a frequent contributor to many national dog and sporting magazines. Donated by Pam Nealer.

The TRAINING LIBRARY now has TWO Wish Lists. You can purchase materials (new or used) off the Amazon list; the Dogwise has new books and DVDs. Purchases can be shipped directly to the library. Pretty quick and easy way to help out MAESSR as well as educate adopters!
Rainbow Bridge Crossings
YOSHI (VAN, class of 2015) came to MAESSR because he did not get along well with the young grandchildren in his Virginia home as they made him very nervous. He was fostered by DEBBIE LIPCSEY and adopted by THE HOTTS – MICHAEL, ALICIA, AND BRAYDEN – after a long eleven month wait. They made a family trip to tour DC and meet/pick-up Yoshi. When the door opened and Yoshi stepped out, Mike was blown away with how handsome he was. From that moment they became each other’s shadow. Yoshi was nearly 6 when he settled into the family. He was the perfect companion. Besides a few accidents, he never did anything bad/mischievous. He only cared about getting belly rubs and giving puppy kisses. He was Mike’s best buddy, and Mike was his human. Unfortunately, in 2019 Yoshi was diagnosed with Cushing’s and then shortly after diabetes. Medication was able to manage his diseases but then in 2022 Yoshi went blind. He battled all 3 ailments and never lost his spirit. Recently that changed, and he seemed to lose his love of life. At age 14 his quality of life was lacking so the hard decision to end his pain was made to allow him to be at peace, and he was euthanized at home. Their house is empty now. The Hotts would like to thank all of the MAESSR volunteers. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed. Matching them with Yoshi was life changing for them.
JUSTIN TIME (class of 2008) came to MAESSR when a call requesting help pulling Springer puppies came from a shelter after a massive puppy mill breakup. At the shelter, JEAN KLUNK remembers seeing a gorgeous tri-colored baby looking at them and shared, ‘I just failed fostering again’ and brought ‘Justin’ and his litter mate, Abby, home to foster. Justin wound up being incredibly sick (and fearful) and was treated by the veterinarian for one ailment at a time. The vet warned them that Justin was so sick his survival chances beyond a month were incredibly slim. The best Christmas present was Justin receiving an “all clear” from his vet. And that was their sign to finalize his adoption. Over the years, JT developed severe, severe allergies, finding he was allergic to different trees, pollen, grass, dust, mites, moths, …. cats… and humans!! JT’s challenges didn’t stop there. He developed a significant heart murmur, glaucoma, dry eye, high blood pressure, chronic ear infections, arthritis, and thyroid disease. And he remained a trooper through it all. He LOVED patrolling his yard, taking in the smells. Recently he started getting very, very slow and no longer did his patrolling. His eyes said it all… he was tired. JT will be forever missed, the fella that enjoyed life despite so many obstacles. Thank you to MAESSR, the MAESSR volunteers, to HOPE Veterinary Specialists (now BluePearl), to his numerous extraordinary veterinarians, and to all of their friends and family. A beautiful pup that was rescued just in time and taught them so much.

We’re on Mastodon now! Twitter throttles low-follower accounts, making it pointless for us to post there. Come on over to Mastodon and discover lots of other wonderful animal rescue groups, dog owners, and shelters, and posts on any topic you can think of. It works much like Twitter, so the format will be familiar.
MAESSR Museum: We’re creating a gallery of MAESSR stories and we want to hear from you! In one paragraph, tell us about your favorite MAESSR memory. That can be about a dog you adopted or fostered, how you first found MAESSR, a memorable event you attended, or anything else. Please include a relevant picture, or just one of your MAESSR dog. Send to maessrorders@gmail.com. Here is an example: Bucky’s story.
ADOPTED DOGS PROJECT: Please check to see if your dog is listed on our “Success Stories” page. (Click on the photo above the adoption year and go through the pages to find your dog. Dogs are in alphabetical order – hover over pics to find names.) In migrating the dog profiles over to the new site, we found several dogs that were missing information or had their information confused with another dog. If your dog is not listed or the information/pictures are incorrect, click here to let us know. Please specify which dog, what year they were adopted, and include their proper write up and/or pictures so we can amend the errors. Thanks.
VIDEOS – VIDEOS – VIDEOS! We have a new YouTube channel called Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue. FOSTER HOMES ARE ENCOURAGED TO SEND IN VIDEOS OF THEIR CURRENT CHARGES FOR BOTH YOUTUBE AND THE DOGS’ ADOPTION PAGES. We need the dogs’ official MAESSR names and numbers as nicknames are too confusing. When sharing videos of adopted dogs, please also include the adoption year along with their official MAESSR name. Please send your videos here.
If you have a PET IN NEED OF PRAYERS, please contact Linda Shope or Linda Johnston. They would be happy to add your pet’s name to the pet ministry prayer list.
IF YOU SEE A SPRINGER NEEDING RESCUE: For a springer being rehomed in an ad on social media or in a newspaper, please email the relinquishment team. For a springer in a shelter, please email the shelter dog team. In your email include contact info such as links to the online post, shelter name, state, and phone number. Did you move?
