IT’S A FUNDRAISER! To mark 25 years of MAESSR, we’ve launched a t-shirt fundraiser. You can choose from two t-shirts, a long-sleeve t-shirt, or a crewneck sweatshirt in a variety of colors. All proceeds help MAESSR continue to find homes for Springers in need.

Featured Library Titles
COLD NOSES AND WARM HEARTS (232 pages) by a compilation of great authors. When originally published in 1959, this marvelous collection of dog stories compiled by the late humorist Corey Ford was an immediate bestseller. For this edition, Ford selected pieces written by his friends and peers whose names appeared on the mastheads of The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Life, and Colliers, including such greats as Thurber, Benchley, Wodehouse, White, Woollcott, and Marquis. Ford also provided balance with stories from Steinbeck, Lardner, Lawrence and others, including his own superbly poignant, original version of his classic short, The Road to Tinkhamtown. All the stories in Cold Noses and Warm Hearts share the same theme, whether underscored by humor or deep emotion: the strong, enigmatic bond between dog and master. Laurie Morrow is the official biographer of Dartmouth College, Corey Ford Archives, and is a frequent contributor to many national dog and sporting magazines. Donated by Pam Nealer.
OUTWITTING DOGS: REVOLUTIONARY TECHNIQUES FOR TRAINING DOGS THAT WORK (288 pages) by Terry Ryan and Kirsten Mortensen. Training dogs has traditionally been done by using negative reinforcement and brute force (take the choke collar as an example). But the tide is turning, and Terry Ryan, well-known dog trainer, is at the forefront of a revolution. OUTWITTING DOGS draws on her twenty-five years of hands-on experience helping people understand and train dogs, and solve dog behavior problems using kinder, gentler methods. OUTWITTING DOGS uses more brain than brawn to motivate dog behavior with positive training techniques, and helps readers truly understand their minds. Chapters cover: out-witting puppies, housebreaking, curing the chronic chewer; how to cure the leash puller, the dog that jumps on people, the dog that hates to be left alone, the dog that won’t come, the dog that barks too much, the biter, the aggressor; how to outwit the neighbor’s dog; how to teach your dog tricks; how to outwit dog trainers; and even a chapter on outwitting dogs and kids at the same time, and much more. No sensible dog owner will want to be without a copy.
Library Wish Lists
The TRAINING LIBRARY now has TWO Wish Lists. You can purchase materials (new or used) off the Amazon list; the Dogwise has new books and DVDs. Purchases can be shipped directly to the library. Pretty quick and easy way to help out MAESSR as well as educate adopters!

Permanent foster BEEF. Beef and his housemate Gabby came to MAESSR because their Pennsylvania owner had too many dogs in the home. After he was neutered, his testicles became very enlarged and his foster mom took him back to be examined. He was suffering from edema there and in his lymph nodes — a highly unusual condition – and was diagnosed with lymphoma. Although the vet gave Beef two to six months to live, he did not make a full two months. His foster mom and her vet felt that Beef must be in pain and the kindest thing to do was to euthanize him. With great sadness, his foster mom CHERI SAGGERS stayed with her sweet boy to the end. Beef just wanted to live, but his cancer robbed him of that chance. In his brief time with his foster family, Beef had a good time at their farm, running in the cow pasture and being in the open air and most of all enjoying love and attention. Run free from pain and be happy, sweet boy!
PEPPER 10 aka PADDIE (Class of 2018), an English Cocker, was the beloved 12-year-old boy of an elderly PA woman who left him with her son when she went into a nursing home. Unfortunately, the son fell ill, and his caregiver could not handle caring for Pepper as well. So, two good Samaritans stepped in, and this wonderful fellow soon became a MAESSR boy. He was fostered by DEBBIE LIPCSEY and adopted by JUDY CHESSER. He was a little trooper and the perfect gentleman. When he first came into MAESSR he was blind but after cataract surgery, he could see – not perfectly but enough to run around. He was a smart boy. He would memorize his surroundings and as long as you didn’t move the furniture or the swimming pool, he could navigate very well. He was a guard dog. His bravery knew no bounds – large dogs or humans not acting trustworthy, he was on the case. Judy’s family adopted him with Casey (MAESSR 2018 Buddy 42). The two of them bonded completely on the ride home. Paddie was soon to be 18 years old so it was a good long run, and he enjoyed his retirement in Florida. Judy shall miss the little gentleman.
JET, now known as JESSE (Class of 2016) came into MAESSR as an abused dog. He entered foster care with CHERYL AND RICK LARNER. It took time to gain his trust and help him learn what a loving routine could do for him. Jesse stayed with the Larners and was their snuggle boy who loved to swim, get belly rubs and explore the yard. They often joked that barking was his hobby as he barked at walkers, delivery trucks and sometimes leaves blowing down the street. Jesse began experiencing neurological problems with his spine and legs in late summer. He rapidly declined in many areas of daily living; they could tell he was in pain and was no longer a happy dog. The difficult decision was made to send him to the bridge. He was 10.5 years old. Jesse is greatly missed, especially his barking.

ADOPTED DOGS PROJECT: Please check to see if your dog is listed on our “Success Stories” page. (Click on the photo above the adoption year and go through the pages to find your dog. Hover over pics for dogs’ names. Dogs are in alphabetical order.) In migrating the dog profiles over to the new site, we found several dogs that were missing information or had their information confused with another dog. If your dog is not listed or the information/pictures are incorrect, click here to let us know. Please specify which dog, what year they were adopted, and include their proper write up and/or pictures so we can amend the errors. Thanks.
From Tiffaney Williams: “We’re creating a gallery of MAESSR stories and we want to hear from you! In one paragraph, tell us about your favorite MAESSR memory. That can be about a dog you adopted or fostered, how you first found MAESSR, a memorable event you attended, or anything else. Please include a relevant picture, or just one of your MAESSR dog. Send to maessrorders@gmail.com.” Here is an example of a story: https://maessr.org/example-story/. PLEASE SEND ASAP TO MAESSRORDERS@GMAIL.COM. Thanks, everyone!
VIDEOS – VIDEOS – VIDEOS! We have a new YouTube channel called Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue. FOSTER HOMES ARE ENCOURAGED TO SEND IN VIDEOS OF THEIR CURRENT CHARGES FOR BOTH YOUTUBE AND THE DOGS’ ADOPTION PAGES. We need the dogs’ official MAESSR names and numbers as nicknames are too confusing. When sharing videos of adopted dogs, please also include the adoption year along with their official MAESSR name. Please send your videos here.
If you have a PET IN NEED OF PRAYERS, please contact Linda Shope or Linda Johnston. They would be happy to add your pet’s name to the pet ministry prayer list.
