NEW TO THE LIBRARY! THE OFFICIAL AKC GUIDE – CANINE GOOD CITIZEN (192 pages) by Mary R. Burch, PhD. The Canine Good Citizen (R) program was created by the American Kennel Club (R) to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. Written by Mary R. Burch, PhD, with input from the respected dog experts at the American Kennel Club (R) — the very same organization that designed the test — Canine Good Citizen – The Official AKC Guide will help dog owners easily maneuver through the program’s 10-step curriculum, with a focus on responsible pet ownership and basic good manners for dogs. This 192-page must-have guide encourages responsible dog ownership to ensure that well-mannered dogs remain welcome in every community! Donated by Ruth Zimmerman.
OOGY: THE DOG ONLY A FAMILY COULD LOVE (214 pages) by Larry Levin. In the bestselling tradition of Rescuing Sprite comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted. In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen–one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue–ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy’s charms, and decided to take him home. Heartwarming and redemptive, Oogy is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him “Oogy” (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own. Donated by Liz Watson.
Library Wish Lists
The TRAINING LIBRARY now has TWO Wish Lists. You can purchase materials (new or used) off the Amazon list; the Dogwise has new books and DVDs. Purchases can be shipped directly to the library. Pretty quick and easy way to help out MAESSR as well as educate adopters!
Rainbow Bridge Crossings
LUCY 9 aka Luci (class of 2015) was fostered by EVA VAN STRATUM and adopted by DIANE DAMRON’s family. She was the absolute light of their lives until they had to make the devastating decision to put her down. She was rushed to the emergency vet who diagnosed her with a splenic hemangiosarcoma. Unfortunately, it appeared an artery had ruptured, and she was bleeding internally. Her prognosis was poor, and advice to limit her suffering was heeded. At only 9 years old, it seems so cruel they didn’t have more time with her. However, their whole experience with MAESSR was wonderful and they wouldn’t have changed a thing (except for more time with their love). Thanks to everyone who puts so much time and effort into these wonderful friends. The Damon’s will be making a donation in Luci’s memory to help MAESSR continue its amazing work. And hopefully when the time is right, they will be ready to open our hearts to a new companion.
BUDDY 40 (class of 2017) came to MAESSR from another rescue that had not been able to find him a forever home. They said most of their adopters thought he was too big (more of him to love!) He was fostered by DEBBIE LIPCSEY and adopted by LINDA AND CORBY MYERS. They adopted Buddy when he was 6 years old. He had a known heart murmur when he was adopted. His recent cardiology visit revealed 2 leaky valves for which he was receiving medication, but his heart just gave out. Buddy was a total lovebug and stayed by Linda’s side constantly. He loved exploring the yard and going for walks on the nearby golf course. Their other springer, Bo, also a MAESSR boy, misses him so much, as they all do. They will always love their Buddy and are grateful for the time he was with them.

ADOPTED DOG PROJECT: Please check to see if your dog is listed on our “Success Stories” page. In migrating the dog profiles over to the new site, we found several dogs that were missing information or had their information confused with another dog. If your dog is not listed or the information/pictures are incorrect, click here to let us know. Please specify which dog, what year they were adopted, and include their proper write up and/or pictures so we can amend the errors. Thanks.
IMPORTANT INFO! The io mail groups will be going away in the near future, and everyone will need to re-subscribe to the Weekly Pupdate on the new website to receive it. The “Subscribe to Weekly Pupdate” link can be found in various places on the new website, at the bottom of the home page and usually in the right sidebars. Fill out your name and email address, complete the captcha, and confirm your subscription in your mailbox. Remember to check your Spam folder for the confirmation email. In the future, if you need to change your email address, you can do that in your account settings once you set those up. You can set up your account under Register/Login at the top of the home page. Access to your account will be in the top right-hand corner. The Weekly Pupdate will be a work in progress so look for it to change as we go along. (I appreciate everyone’s patience!) In the meantime, the Weekly Update will still go out in the io mail groups and on Facebook until the complete switchover is made.
Look for more info on the new website in the coming weeks! In the meantime, check out the tutorials here.
From Tiffaney Williams: “We’re creating a gallery of MAESSR stories and we want to hear from you! In one paragraph, tell us about your favorite MAESSR memory. That can be about a dog you adopted or fostered, how you first found MAESSR, a memorable event you attended, or anything else. Please include a relevant picture, or just one of your MAESSR dog. Send here.” Click here for an example of a story.
VIDEOS – VIDEOS – VIDEOS! MAESSR has a new YouTube channel (called Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue) linked to our new website with videos from the old YouTube channel (MAESSR) and our other dogs being uploaded. FOSTER HOMES ARE ENCOURAGED TO SEND IN VIDEOS OF THEIR CURRENT CHARGES FOR BOTH YOUTUBE AND THE DOGS’ ADOPTION PAGES. We will be coming up with a few simple guidelines but will definitely need the dogs’ official MAESSR names and numbers as nicknames are too confusing. When sharing videos of adopted dogs, please also include the adoption year along with their official MAESSR name. Please send your videos here.
If you have a PET IN NEED OF PRAYERS, please contact Linda Shope or Linda Johnston. They would be happy to add your pet’s name to the pet ministry prayer list.
IF YOU SEE A SPRINGER NEEDING RESCUE: For a springer being rehomed in an ad on social media or in a newspaper, please email the relinquishment team. For a springer in a shelter, please email the shelter team. In your email include contact info such as links to the online post, shelter name, state, and phone number. Did you move? Did you change your email address?
If you need some advice regarding behavioral issues, certified and credentialed trainers that use positive methods only to help guide people to the correct resources can be found at CCPDT and at IAABC.
