News & Pupcoming Events
IT’S A FUNDRAISER! To mark 25 years of MAESSR, we’ve launched a t-shirt fundraiser. You can choose from two t-shirts, a long-sleeve t-shirt, or a crewneck sweatshirt in a variety of colors. All proceeds help MAESSR continue to find homes for Springers in need.
Featured Dogs
Our program, SENIORS FOR SENIORS, charges a $75 adoption fee for adopters aged 60 and over who adopt dogs nine years old and older or special needs dogs. If interested in one of our senior/special needs dogs, contact Candi Lynn here.
Misc. Funding/Resources
iGive is a MAESSR affiliate which is an automatic donation when shopping at +1500 stores. Go to igive.com, fill out the form, and choose your cause which is Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue. Find us listed under Virginia and then install the app. You can also install the iGive button on your toolbar so when you go to eligible sites, a pop-up will appear to ask you if you wish to donate.
DOGWISE.COM is another MAESSR affiliate whose mission is to bring humane, understandable and scientifically sound information to people who enrich their lives by working with, playing with and loving dogs. Many of the books, including the booklets, in the MAESSR library can be found at Dogwise.com. You can support MAESSR and get great training advice by shopping. They also sell toys and other products. Look for the $5 books on sale while you are there!
The MAESSR MARKETPLACE is open 24/7 for purchases. We’ve also got cool toys for man’s best friend and companion. The MAESSR store and website are in transition – thanks so much for your understanding while we make improvements to the store and website.

Featured Library Books
LESSONS FROM TARA: LIFE ADVICE FROM THE WORLD’S MOST BRILLIANT DOG (227 pages) by David Rosenfelt. David Rosenfelt’s loyal readers of the Andy Carpenter series are familiar with Tara, the golden retriever sidekick. Many also got to know Tara from Dogtripping, David’s nonfiction book about becoming a slightly nutty dog rescuer and the dog that started it all. Here, finally, is a book all about the inspirational canine who taught David everything he knows. Well, he did know how to tie his shoes before he met and came to love Tara, but that’s about it. Through Tara, David learned about dating, about being able to share his emotions, and also about everyday stuff like who gets to use the pillow if several dogs are sleeping in your bed (clue: it’s not the human), and why random barking can never be eliminated. Lessons from Tara is infused with David’s trademark wry and self-deprecating sense of humor, and will move readers to tears and laughter. Donated by Pam Nealer.
MODERN DOG PARENTING: RAISING YOUR DOG OR PUPPY TO BE A LOVING MEMBER OF YOUR FAMILY (308 pages) by Sarah Hodgson. A fun and accessible manual for all dog parents who want to train their dog with a focus on parenting rather than dominating. You and your dog are a lot alike. By several behavioral measures, your dog’s mental abilities are equivalent to those of a two to three-and-a-half-year-old toddler. Dogs can learn up to 250 words, count from one to five and understand basic arithmetic. Your dog can imitate and understand your behavior and has a sense of fairness. Doesn’t it make sense to treat these sensitive, intelligent creatures a bit more like children? Kids―and dogs―raised with kindness and respect grow up happy. And happy is good. Modern Dog Parenting will show readers that yes, you can love your dog and live with him, too. Dogs (and the people who love them) are tired of the school of dominant, top-dog training. They are looking for a new kind of pack leader: someone funny, enthusiastic, intuitive, approachable, and, above all, effective. And they’ve found her. Sarah Hodgson rejects dominance-based training and gets astonishing results with a blend of wit, compassion, energy, and proven skills. She communicates instructions clearly, directs behavior compassionately, and rewards success lavishly. Topics include: Understanding the signs your dog is giving you – Having fun while learning manners – How to fit your dog into your lifestyle – How to communicate lovingly and effectively with your dog. Donated by Cathy Moyer.
Wish Lists
The TRAINING LIBRARY now has TWO Wish Lists. You can purchase materials (new or used) off the Amazon list; the Dogwise has new books and DVDs. Purchases can be shipped directly to the library. Pretty quick and easy way to help out MAESSR as well as educate adopters!
Did You Know?
ADOPTED DOG PROJECT: Please check to see if your dog is listed on our “Success Stories” page. In migrating the dog profiles over to the new site, we found several dogs that were missing information or had their information confused with another dog. If your dog is not listed or the information/pictures are incorrect, click here to let us know. Please specify which dog, what year they were adopted, and include their proper write up and/or pictures so we can amend the errors. Thanks.
IMPORTANT INFO! The io mail groups will be going away in the near future, and everyone will need to re-subscribe to the Weekly Pupdate on the new website to receive it. The “Subscribe to the Weekly Pupdate” link can be found in various places on the website, at the bottom of the home page and usually in the right-hand sidebars. Fill out your name and email address, complete the captcha, and confirm your subscription in your mailbox. In the future, if you need to change your email address, you can do that in your account settings once you set those up under Register/Login at the top of the home page. Access to your account will be in the top right-hand corner. The Weekly Pupdate will be a work in progress so look for it to change as we go along. (I appreciate everyone’s patience!) In the meantime, the Weekly Update will still go out in the io mail groups until the complete switchover is made.
Look for more info on the new website in the coming weeks! In the meantime, check out the tutorials here.
From Tiffaney Williams: “We’re creating a gallery of MAESSR stories and we want to hear from you! In one paragraph, tell us about your favorite MAESSR memory. That can be about a dog you adopted or fostered, how you first found MAESSR, a memorable event you attended, or anything else. Please include a relevant picture, or just one of your MAESSR dog. Send here.” Click here for an example of a story.
VIDEOS – VIDEOS – VIDEOS! MAESSR has a new YouTube channel (called Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue) linked to our new website with videos from the old YouTube channel (MAESSR) and our other dogs being uploaded. FOSTER HOMES ARE ENCOURAGED TO SEND IN VIDEOS OF THEIR CURRENT CHARGES FOR BOTH YOUTUBE AND THE DOGS’ ADOPTION PAGES. We will be coming up with a few simple guidelines but will definitely need the dogs’ official MAESSR names and numbers as nicknames are too confusing. When sharing videos of adopted dogs, please also include the adoption year along with their official MAESSR name. Please send your videos here.
If you have a PET IN NEED OF PRAYERS, please contact Linda Shope or Linda Johnston. They would be happy to add your pet’s name to the pet ministry prayer list.
IF YOU SEE A SPRINGER NEEDING RESCUE: For a springer being rehomed in an ad on social media or in a newspaper, please email the relinquishment team. For a springer in a shelter, please email the shelter team. In your email include contact info such as links to the online post, shelter name, state, and phone number.
Did you move? Did you change your email address? ADDRESS CHANGES can be emailed to addresschange@maessr.org. This is changing with the new website. Please set up an account under the Shop tab so that MAESSR can keep track of your mailing address; your email can be changed under Your Account in the top right-hand corner with Edit Profile.
If you need some advice regarding behavioral issues, certified and credentialed trainers that use positive methods only to help guide people to the correct resources can be found at CCPDT and at IAABC.
Gentle Reminders
RAINBOW BRIDGE CROSSINGS are shared on a monthly basis. If you would like your MAESSR dog included, please send your name, dog’s MAESSR name if different than the post-adoption name, year of adoption, and a PHOTO to here. Feel free to include who fostered the dog and a little background info about your dog. To have the information posted on MAESSR’s Facebook page, send it (including photos) here.
When you send your notes about events or requests for help, please cc: updates@maessr.org to help ensure that all events are mentioned in the Weekly Update.
Mistakes happen! Corrections or omissions to the Weekly Pupdate can be sent to Cathy.
